WHat happens if that falls through or is delayed by economic reasons out of control of anyone. Then the city is on the hook for a stadium for upwards to $300 million. IF the voter of Pinellas county and/or St. Pete are that willing then let them. I live in Hillsborough COunty and any stadium deal should not affect me directly. james |

Stated another way...not in the next 15 years. The days of hold up the city or we will move are over. The City of St Petersburg did a geat joib with their stadium lease on the Trop. If Sternberg wants to move the team, it will cost him plenty. Unless he can find a New York City size fan base (Mexico City???) he is stuck in St Pete until the lease expires. sam |

Really? Who do you think is going to pay for it? The State of FLoida
helped out on previous stadiums but the State has a big budget crisis, the economy isn't good so taxpayers (particularly retirees which make a big St Pete base aren't eager to kick in. Do you think Stu Sternberg (who has trouble funding payroll for a small market time) has the financial wherewithal to make it happen on his own? sam "james" <george@washington.edu> wrote in message news:4uss14tufgl4j7nlk487jqa02t8ou01pu6@4ax.com... > On Tue, 29 Apr 2008 10:49:49 -0700, jdjj2@msn.com (Jack Johnson) > wrote: > > |Do you think the stadium will be built? > > > yes > > james |

I answered yes. That does not mean it will pay for itself. You made an assumption that never was implied. Stu and St Pete will get nothing from the state for this stadium, period. That 60 million dollar fund is for new sports franchises an dto help them out i building their first stadium. the Rays are not new. Where in the world do you get that the Tampa St Pete TV market is a "small market" area? If you include Sarasota into the mix we are 12th largest. I don't think that is small. I would think New Orleans or Bangor Maine as small markets. The whole deal is hinged on the redevelopment of the Tropicanna site and the corridor downto Bayside. If the whole thing comes to fruition the city of St Pete is about $700 million to the black. Go look at the proposals for the Trop and surronding areas, that is if you can navigate the net with your webtv. A lot hinges right now in finding someone to redevelope the Trop site and that corridor and finding buyers and retailers to set up shop. The reason I t hink it will be built is that there is very good chance that the redevelopement will happen and in the short term the city of St Pere will be a plus for the city. I just don't think they will realize the total $700 million that is projected. In the long run they will do good to break even. james |"james" <george@washington.edu> wrote in message |news:4uss14tufgl4j7nlk487jqa02t8ou01pu6@4ax.com.. . |> On Tue, 29 Apr 2008 10:49:49 -0700, jdjj2@msn.com (Jack Johnson) |> wrote: |> |> |Do you think the stadium will be built? |> |> |> yes |> |> james | |

If the Rays have a great season.....let's say make the playoffs, and
continue on into next season, maybe, for the first time, actually be a contender....don't you think the state of Florida would be willing to help out? Jack. |
