Default scoring question?

runner on first, 2 outs,

the speedy batter laces one down the line, circles the bases and
slides safely into third.

a split second later, the slower base runner is thrown out at home for
the third out.

is this a triple or a double?

It's a TRIPLE, since he slud into 3b!
<G, I just love saying 'slud', a la Dizzy Dean>

Also, score a FC (ex., 9-2 or 7-2) for the out by the slow
runner at Home.

that's what I think. A friend says it is a double and advances to
third on the FC...timing has naught to do with it...

Double and advanced on a Fielders choice, I believe.

Here is a good one?

With one out the Slower runner gets tagged out at Home, but the batter
slides in right behind and scores, Inside the park HR or triple and
advanced on a Fielders Choice?

I am an umpire and here is a little known ruling:

Let's say there's a runner at 1st.

The batter hits the ball into the corner for extra bases. The runner
from first attempts to score but is going to be thrown out by such a
huge margin he attempts to abort his advance to home and gets caught in
a rundown between 3rd and home. Meanwhile, the batter pulls into 3rd
while the rundown is still going on. The runner who is trapped in the
rundown commits an interference violation (i.e. intentionally
bumps/touches a fielder or intentionally tries to get struck by the
ball). The play immediately becomes dead. The runner who is guilty of
the interference is out, and the runner standing on 3rd must return to 2nd.

The other runner has to return since, on interference, all other runners
must return to the last base "legally touched" at the time of the
interference. At the time of the interference, 3rd base was "owned" by
the trapped runner.

Although, I don't think that rule interpretation would have any effect
on the scoring as stated in the original post.

I'd rule it a triple, also.

Isn't there something in the rule book about the batter being
more than halfway toward the next base when the runner is thrown out, he
usually gets credit from the scorer (his judgment) for that next base; and
therefore a
TRIPLE is the correct ruling, as you mentioned?

In the famous case of Babe Herman 'doubling into a double play', the
lead runner was awarded third base, hence Herman and the sandwiched
runner were both declared out...

Not sure how that relates to this situation, but surely it must
