Matt Morris, the veteran right-hander added by the Pittsburgh Pirates late
last season to stabilize a young rotation, was released Sunday after failing to pitch past the second inning in his latest start. Morris fell to 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA after giving up six runs, three earned, and six hits in 1 2-3 innings during an 8-4 loss to the Phillies on Saturday night. ![]() |

Most people knew that Matty Mo didn't have much, if anything left, by mid-season last year. But the Pirates traded for him and agreed to take on all of his salary. So by releasing him, they're still on the hook for the $9 million he's owed this season. Another point of interest with regard to Morris, is that he's really the only counter-example that you can point to when the argument is made that La Russa and Duncan have never successfully developed a young pitcher. But even so, Morris appears to be done at age 33. -- Lance "In a world filled with hate, prejudice, and protest, I find that I too am filled with hate, prejudice, and protest." -- Bob Gibson ----== Posted via Pronews.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.pronews.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! >100,000 Newsgroups ---= - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

I wondered why the Pirates would swallow all of a contract of a washed up
player. This is a sad ending to a career. I guess nether the team or Morris knows when the end is the end. Another player that he Giants ought to pull as a starter is Barry Zito. It is amazing that Zito drew the kind of salary he did (127 mil). It is also amazing how fast he fell. Under La Russa and Duncan, Morris struggled with injuries early in his career, missing all of 1999 and large portions of 1998 and 2000. |

Yeah, we all know that, Ahti. Nonetheless, Morris did have a considerable run of success under the tutelage of TLR and Duncan. -- Lance Created in 1926 by the Marching Illini, there is no more stirring and dignified tradition on any college campus than the Three In One.
