Ortmeier has not been really given a chance. I saw where Lance Niekro was
invited tot he Astros camp this spring .. I wonder what happened to him? But at 1B there's no better alternative. He's shown he has power potential when he isn't grounding out. What I've noticed during his slump is that he's in such a freakin' hurry in the batters box, like he's double-parked or needs to cut back on caffeine. Not real picky about what he swings at, and he swings a lot. He looked much more patient when he first came up. I bet the scouting reports now say pitch him down and in, he'll swing. Ortmeier had his chances and has proven to be a consistently below average hitter. You'll say Bowker only had one really good weekend, but Ortmeier never even had that. Bowker at least has the potential to go on another tear. -Pat |

There's no reason to give him a chance in the majors. Meanwhile, in cheap talent news, two guys are now available: Jason Botts, passing through waivers by the Rangers, and Brad Wilkerson, released by the Mariners. I'm not a Botts fan. I don't really see any reason to put him ahead of Lewis, Bowker, or Nate S....he might make it as a major leaguer, but they might too, and I don't really think his chances of being worth something are higher. OTOH, I've always liked Wilkerson quite a bit. He's not going to be a star, and would be unlikely to be a plus player on the next good Giants team, but he certainly could have three good months and have some trade value. I'd rather have him on the team than Castillo, Aurilia, or Ortmeier. Because he's getting old, he doesn't have the upside that Dan Johnson would have had, but I would still be moderately happy if Sabean picked him up. One more thing: it looks like Posada is going to only be out a month, but I sure hope that Sabean has been on the phone with the Yankees -- any time a starting catcher for a contender sneezes, Sabean needs to be reminding them that Molina can be had for the right combination of prospects. Given the team is not going anywhere, I think we'd still rather see Bowker, but man, he's trying his best to lose his job, ain't he? > OTOH, I've always liked Wilkerson quite a bit. If that's the plan, then forget it, 'cause Sabean would never trade him if he has 3 good months. He might dump him if he stinks, that's about it. > One more thing: it looks like Posada is going to only be out a month, > but I sure hope that Sabean has been on the phone with the Yankees -- > any time a starting catcher for a contender sneezes, Sabean needs to be > reminding them that Molina can be had for the right combination of > prospects. I can't picture him trading Molina either. Whatever offense they have now would really be gone if he's gone, and the front office wouldn't want to see that. |

Seattle dumped him because they are going younger and the Giants should too. Wilkerson probably is a better hitter than Castillo but he can't play third and they won't move Aurilia due to Sabean's Man-love for him > One more thing: it looks like Posada is going to only be out a month, > but I sure hope that Sabean has been on the phone with the Yankees -- > any time a starting catcher for a contender sneezes, Sabean needs to be > reminding them that Molina can be had for the right combination of > prospects. > Molina should be move too but that would eliminate any offense the Giants have now. Maybe later like in August to a contender. Tampa Bay may be getting illusions that they may contend all year long and need a hitting catcher. On Bowker...let him have 3-4 months to hit or miss. He might be one of those streaky players that goes 4-40 and then 15-40. |
