Padre 5, Cubs 4

Catcher Terry Kennedy hits a 3-run homer with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th
inning to cap a come-from-behind win by San Diego over Chicago, 5-4.
Kennedy also has a single in the game. First baseman Steve Garvey adds 2
hits, and right fielder Tony Gwynn has a double and 2 runs scored. Reliever
Craig Lefferts (3-0) gets the win after pitching a scoreless 9th inning for
the Padres. Starter LaMarr Hoyt pitches 5 innings, giving up 2 runs, 2
hits, and a walk.

For Chicago, starter Rick Sutcliffe lasts 8-1/3 innings but is unable to
close out San Diego. Reliever Ray Fontenot (1-1) takes the loss when he is
unable to retire any Padres and is charged with giving up the final 2 runs
of the game. Second baseman Ryne Sandberg goes 1 for 3, with 1 run and 1
RBI.

Record-setting note: On this date in 2003, the Padres set a team record for
most wild pitches allowed, giving up 5 in a 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh at
Qualcomm Stadium. Starter Adam Eaton throw 4 wild pithces in 3-1/3 innings,
and reliever Brandon Villafuerte allows 1 in 2 innings pitched.
