By RICHARD KNOWLER - The Dominion Post Wednesday, 30 April 2008 Former All Blacks captain Todd Blackadder says Crusaders flanker Kieran Read should replace Jerry Collins in the All Blacks. Read, the form No6 among the five New Zealand Super 14 teams, has been one of the most consistent performers in the Crusaders pack and a contender for the All Blacks. All Blacks coach Graham Henry had intimated that he would base his selections on form rather than reputation, and if he remains true to that Read would start ahead of Collins. "I haven't seen Jerry Collins put together a performance that has bettered anything Kieran Read has done this year," Blackadder said. "Week-in, week-out, Read has been the best No6 on the track." However, Henry has long been a fan of Collins' ability to intimidate opponents with his defensive hits and Blackadder admitted the coach may want to stick with those he has relied on before. "I suppose there is some loyalty there. But the pressure is really on Jerry now isn't it?" Collins did not play against the Cheetahs in Kimberley last weekend, having returned home with a rib injury, but it is hoped he will be back to play the Lions in Wellington on Saturday. Another contender for the blindside spot is the Blues' Jerome Kaino, while Liam Messam (Chiefs) still needs time. His teammate Sione Lauaki can also play there, as can the Hurricanes' Chris Masoe. Read has been an automatic selection for Robbie Deans this season, starting at No6 in the opener against the Brumbies after Reuben Thorne was sidelined because of injury. Despite Thorne's recovery, Deans retained Read, who quickly adapted his game to the playing style required under the Experimental Law Variations. If not wanted by Henry for three tests against Ireland and England and the Tri-Nations, Read should be a certainty for the grand slam tour at the end of the year, Blackadder said. |

Blackadder, Thorne... Something about Canterbury and blindside flankers/ locks. Read is doomed. |

But as for being the consistent best #6 in S14, I don't know what Blackadder's inhaling - it's only 10 days since the Chiefs' loosies put their Crusaders' counterparts (including Read) to the sword. |

What we don't know is how this whole thing come about. RK: Hey Toddy, Richard Knowler here, rugby writer for the Dominion Post, TB: huh? RK: Just like to know your opinion on the rising Canterbury superstar Kieran Read. TB: er, who? RK: Kieran Read, the Crusaders no.6, form blindside flanker in the competition at the moment. TB: Oh. Kieran. yeah, he seems to be doing the job RK: Doing the job? Oh c'mon, Toddy, week in, week out he's been the best & most consistent no.6 in the super 14. The stats show this! TB: They do? RK: Yes. In fact all the rugby experts I've spoken to say he's the best. Are you disargreeing with them? TB: err, well, no , I certainly wouldn't dream of.... RK: Jerry Collins, out injured, from what I understand, he could be out for the season. Do you think Kieran Read would be able to cover Jerry's position in the All Blacks until he's back? TB: well, I suppose he could.. RK: Thanks Toddy, you still da man! TB: But it is a big step up and Kieran's only... RK: Bad line Toddy, sorry, gotta go BYE! Kees |

Former Canterbury blindside supports current Canterbury blindside. In other news, water still wet, English rugby still boring. -- rick boyd |

But I'd be a little surprised if the Press rugby writer deliberately took such liberties with a Canterbury icon. |

Or criticising them for that matter. Not during his playing days anyway. Perhaps he's succumbed to that disorder in which former Test players suddenly develop great rugby minds with matching opinions? Kees |

Funnily enough, he's from Canterbury and writes articles mostly for The Press. So we have a Canterbury icon and a canterbury writer talking about a newbie Canterbury blindside in an article that is written for a Canterbury audience. This half-season newbie also just happens to be a better selection than an experienced and talented All Black blindside that just happens to not be from Canterbury. Must come from the Phil Gifford school of writing. Types with only one eye open because the other one is full of Blackadders spooge. Funny that. |

Clearly the best option this season is to select yet another newbie, because we wont have enough of them in the Ab's already. |
