Saints place Porter on injured reserve
Rookie DB out for season, as injury bug again hits N.O.

As Tuesday progressed, the news got worse for Saints starting
cornerback Tracy Porter, who injured his right wrist Monday night
against Minnesota.
By Tuesday evening, the Saints decided to place Porter on the injured
reserve list, ending his first season in the NFL.
Saints Coach Sean Payton said Tuesday in his news conference that
Porter needed surgery on his wrist after dislocating it against the
Vikings. Porter was taken to the hospital Monday night and was
scheduled to be released Tuesday, Payton said.
Porter, a second-round pick out of Indiana, quickly established
himself as a starting at cornerback opposite Mike McKenzie. Porter
started all five of the Saints' regular-season games and had 25
tackles -- third-best on the team -- as well as a sack and an
interception.
He was injured Monday night in the Saints' 30-27 loss to the Vikings,
as Minnesota receiver Bernard Berrian caught a 33-yard touchdown pass
with 7:18 remaining.
Porter's injury was the second in one week for the team's defense and
2008 draft class. Starting defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis, the Saints'
first-round pick, had surgery on a torn meniscus last week and will
miss at least another game, and up to three more.
With two of the Saints' 2008 draft picks -- defensive tackle DeMario
Pressley and receiver Adrian Arrington -- already on injured reserve,
New Orleans only has two draft picks from that class who can play this
season: Ellis and offensive lineman Carl Nicks.
The Saints' secondary has been shorthanded all season, with
cornerbacks Randall Gay, Aaron Glenn, Usama Young and McKenzie all
spending time recovering from injuries. Glenn missed the past two
games, meaning Gay, Young and cornerback Jason David likely will be
filling in with Porter now out.
The other Saints player to leave Monday's game was starting right
tackle Jon Stinchcomb.
"I anticipate being able to go Sunday," Stinchcomb said Tuesday. "I've
got some back spasms going on right now, but in this league
everybody's got something."
Again on Tuesday, Payton alluded to a target return date of Oct. 19
against Carolina for several of his injured players, including tight
end Jeremy Shockey (hernia) and receiver Marques Colston (thumb).
Payton said "we'll see" if Shockey practices this week in advance of
Sunday's game against the Raiders. Shockey said Tuesday that he felt
better, "but it's not my decision when I come back."
THE POSITIVES: Although much of the focus during Tuesday's news
conference from Payton was on the Saints' penalties and turnovers,
Payton often gave credit to the team's defense.
The Vikings had 270 yards Monday night, and running back Adrian
Peterson was held to 32 yards on 21 carries.
"I thought defensively we played with great energy, with great
effort," Payton said. "I thought we did a great job. There are a
couple of plays in there, but overall I was real encouraged with our
fits, our effort, how we tackled. It was probably one of our best
games to date, if not our best game to date, defensively."
Payton also was impressed with the Saints' return game. Reggie Bush
had five punt returns for 176 yards and two touchdowns, and Pierre
Thomas had five kickoff returns for 168 yards.
"The positives were how we played and tackled and hustled on defense,
I think," Payton said. "The positives were how we returned punts and
kickoffs, for that matter, and created field position or created
points in the return game. And that's been an area that we've really
struggled with a lot around here."
EXTRA POINTS: As of Tuesday morning, the comments that Berrian made
about McKenzie and the Saints' secondary were still hanging in
McKenzie's locker.
"He's an old veteran," Berrian reportedly said about McKenzie before
Monday's game. "He's going to be a smart player, but I don't think the
skill is there as much as it used to be."
Berrian had six catches for a career-high 110 yards and a touchdown
Monday.
