Tim Corrigan - Vancouver

Question:
I watched Norv say at the press conference that he thinks the #1 thing
the Bolts need to do is "execute better." I'm worried this means he can keep
ordering up the same game plan and that eventually the results will improve.
Do you have any sense that the coaches are feeling responsible for the
team's consistent underachieving since they took over (ok... except for the
playoff game against the colts)?

Answer:
He also said the coaches have to find ways to help the playmakers make
plays. He's taking it on himself. But the fact is, different players messed
up at different times yesterday. And, as much as it pains me to say, Tim
Sullivan pretty much nailed it today. This team is not the same as the one
everyone had the high hopes for.

Gabriel Cox - Concord, CA.

Question:
Okay Kev. Here we are 2-3, Pats coming to town. Who will step up and put
this team on his shoulders? Rivers, Tomlinson or Kaeding (just kidding, I'm
not a complete idiot) My money is on Phillip, your take?

Answer:
Not sure LT can at this point. A vote for Rivers, because the Patriots'
weakness is in secondary. But how about Shaun Phillips? How about Antonio
Cromartie?

Gary Matthews - Windsor, Ca

Question:
Hey Kevin: I hate to say it, but with games at home against New England,
Indianapolis, Denver, and yes even Atlanta, and road games against Buffalo,
New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay, things could get extremely ugly this
year. I'm trying to remain positive, but if the Chargers end up with a
losing record, do you think that would spell doom for Norv Turner? Or do you
think AJ Smith will remain committed to Norv as head coach to begin next
year, no matter what the record this year? Do you think there is any chance
that Dean Spanos would overrule Smith in the case of a horrible record this
year, especially if a hot coaching commodity became available? What is your
opinion? Thanks Kevin in advance for your answer.

Answer:
Norv isn't going anywhere.

Al Smith - Pacific Beach

Question:
Appreciate the mailbag Kevin and hope you'll be patient enough to answer
this irrelevant and untimely question so a dispute can be settled between
two knuckleheads on a message board. Who was responsible for cutting Wes
Welker, Smith or Schottenheimer? (Warned you that it was irrelevant).
Thanks!
-- Al Smith, Pacific Beach

Answer:
AJ Smith. There was no room for Welker at that time. They had Eric
Parker and Tim Dwight. Mistake. Who knew? (And thanks for the respite from
the avalanche of "fire norv" and "fire ted" and "what's wrong"
questions/comments.)

prolly 'cause no one else is available, or interested...

I still think they should've hired Mariucci

Maybe not during the season, but you don't think that good coaches
would be interested in the offseason? Mariucci would be a good
choice, don't know if he wants to get back on the horse though, he
seems to be enjoying himself in TV.

If the Chargers do finish with a losing record and miss the playoffs,
they should can Norv, even though they won't. Maybe this team isn't
quite what we thought, but they very easily could be 4-1 right now and
they haven't played more than one good half in any game so far. That
tells me that the talent is there, and the coaching is lacking in my
opinion. Hopefully, it's just another slow start like last year, but
the signs aren't really encouraging right now. If this team goes into
a tailspin, I would think you'd have to hold the coaching staff
accountable.

I won't even go that far -- just give us back the Hochuli
game : then the Chargers are 3-2 and the donks are 3-2
(with the Bolts holding the Div. tie-breaker)

It won't happen. Management will give the coaches a reprieve due to the
way the Bolts are banged up this year.

True enough. I was just trying to illustrate the difference between
this year's start and last year's, where the three games they lost
early they got run off the field in.

The only thing that really worries me is that these next three games
are pretty tough. If the Chargers win tomorrow night and at least one
of the other two, I think they'll come out of the bye week in OK shape
to make a run at the division title. I think Denver's coming back to
the pack and 10-6 might be enough with the tiebreaker, which the
Chargers would hold if they sweep their remaining division games.

However, if the Chargers lose two or (heaven forbid all) of the next
three, they can probably write this season off. While the Bolts have
the talent to go 3-0 in this stretch, their inconsistent play suggests
that 0-3 is just as likely. They need to come out strong against the
Pats and not play another weak first half like they have in every game
except the Jets game this year.
