CHARGERS NOTES: Week off won't help L.T.
By JAY PARIS - Staff Writer
SAN DIEGO ---- LaDainian Tomlinson admits that his big right toe hurts. The
Chargers running back concedes that a game doesn't go by when his toe
doesn't restrict him.
So is the answer to skip a game?
"It's not a one-week injury,'' said Tomlinson, who was held to 35 yards on
12 carries in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins, marking the eighth
time in nine games he has failed to reach 100 yards.
"You can't get it better in one week. There is no such thing; nobody can. If
you are injured, you are injured. One week is not going to help. If you take
one week off, you might as well take three weeks off.''
But that's out of the question for the Chargers, who trail the Denver
Broncos by two games in the AFC West race.
"I don't think there is any question we are banged up ---- obviously, just
look at they injury report and see that,'' Tomlinson said. "But at the same
time, we played through stretches like this last year when we were banged up
and we got the job done.''
Rivers OK
For the second straight game, quarterback Philip Rivers took his share of
shots. He was rocked early in the game in the ribs and was sacked twice as
well.
"Just a couple bumps and bruises ---?" it's nothing,'' Rivers said.
What pains Rivers is the Chargers' offense, which seldom got rolling Sunday.
"Three-and-outs can kill you,'' he said. "We would be on the field longer if
we didn't go three-and-out. Maybe we would sustain a seven-, eight-minute
drive like we did early in the game.
"We are going to make some big plays, but that is us, too: ball control,
running, screens. We got to do better when we get it.''
Weddle's imperfect 10
Strong safety Eric Weddle had a game-high 10 tackles Sunday, but he couldn't
celebrate with the team dropping its third game in five weeks.
"We got to know every team is going to give us their best shot,'' Weddle
said. "We have to play our 'A' game to win games and realize that wins in
this league aren't as easy as you think. We got to fight for it.''
Et cetera
Coach Norv Turner said OLB Jyles Tucker (hamstring) remains several weeks
away from returning. ... The Chargers were awaiting test results on WR Chris
Chambers (ankle). ... LG Kris Dielman (thigh) and RG Mike Goff (knee) might
miss practice time this week.
