... to compete in a yawning festival. Is this really happening? Can a
team that should be on it's way to a second Superbowl Championship in
the past 4 years really look this flat and out of sync?

Second? Don't a team need to get to 1 before they can get to the
second?

You mean the Chargers haven't won a Superbowl yet? I guess I must have
imagined that. Damn opium.

This is what happens when fanboys start believing their team's press
clippings.

Point is, and Randall said it elswhere, we had our best hope in 2006
and choked. Just to clarify, we should be on our way to a second
championship but alas we still have none.

Yep. 2006. "Recognition lags performance".

ScottW in that other thread had his timeline off a little bit on some
people, though he had the single weak point ID'd al Rivers experience. 2006
we had everyone that mattered. On D, we had Foley, Merriman, and Phillips on
the edges, and a young Castillo, Olshansky, and "not as old" Jamal, w/a
still-serviceable Randall Godfrey and Donnie Edwards. On the Oline we'd just
discovered McNeil who played his best year that year, then Dielman,
Hardwick, Goff, and Olivea - who might have had trouble w/speed rushers, but
not bad. We had Jammer and Florence, with Cromartie at nickel, and the
boneheaded-but-hard-hitting Kiel at one of the safety spots. LT's best year,
285 TD's if I recall correctly :). Single weak point was Rivers lack of
experience. Should have let the kid sling it. When the sportswriters go on
about San Diego's "talent", it's the 2006 roster still lodged in their
heads. It's the only year I ever posted something like, "Damn, we're just
fucking good!". Only thing I bitched about that year was Brees going.
(<sigh> I was right. But only a little.)

The only place we've clearly improved personnel since 2006 is the receiver
corps.

I was doing this all from memory. Not sure - we lost Foley right before we
discovered McNeil, maybe? I think he might have been out by 2006. And I
can't google, I must go to work, unfortunately.

Was Cromartie doing much beyond kick returns in 06?
I only see 4 pass defenses in his stats.

He was in. He didn't play enough. Which I was sort of grumpy about. Post I
made after the 2006 season, responding to Rene Garcia talking about letting
Florence go:

I thought Cromartie was the best of the DB's talent-wise. As far as
coverage,
well, he was a rookie. But this year my guess is he'll be our best corner.

There were people on this group supporting the cop's shooting of
Foley. The good old days.

Now we've got Wilhelm. What a difference a player or two or three make.
