Does anyone know where I can find the number of at bats Joe DiMaggio had in
each game (not just during his streak) in 1941?

Thanks!

They were all better than Willie Mays?

The Giants led the NL in road attendance for fifteen years in a row. Then
they traded Willie Mays to the Mets. The next year the Mets led the NL in
road attendance. Willie Mays was the greatest five tool player of any era.

Pathetic..any committee that places those 3 above Cob, Williams and Ruth
sucks to the point that their recommendations must be summarily
dismissed and that committee disbanded!

Brock, Mantle, Brett, Fisk, Bench, Munson, Gehrig, and Henderson in no
particular order to name a few.

No. With an echo you get fewer question marks not more.

I suppose I could have phrased it that anybody who ranks Brock
among the game's elite know nothing of the history of the
game -- he doesn't do too badly in career value among LF
but he isn't on radar in peak and the test of greatness is
doing well in both areas. (Though I don't see how you
can argue for greatness without doing very well on the
peak test, I'm willing to discuss only career value
and Brock's consistency serves him well here)

More specifically anybody who lists Brock ahead of Musial
or Wagner or ... well it's a long list of players easily
better that Brock -- who's on the short list for weakest
HOF selection by the BBWAA.

> Odds are your a kid.

Could be. But my posting history does go back to 1994.

(Old enough to remember Ira Blum's spelling flame for
one thing. Not to mention my own time machine post)

One of my recommendations for consideration is Don Sutton! But if I had
a list in front of me, there'd probably be some weaker than he.

Well most of the people who've met me have now migrated to Primer,
but Dan Szymborski does sometimes lurk.

I'm old enough to have memories of watching the 1965 World
Series on newsreels. My earliest clear baseball memory,
though I didn't really start to follow the game until 1969.

I'd think Herb Pennock and Catfish Hunter and possibly Red Ruffing
(Sutton's clearly the better pitcher. Once you throw in Ruffing's
bat though ... well I'd still rather have Sutton) are weaker choices
by the witers.

A few years back Dale Stephenson compared the weakest writer's
picks with the best VC picks

BBWAA VC
C Campanella * Lombardi
1B Sisler Mize
2B Frisch Herman
3B Traynor Baker
SS Maranville Vaughan
LF Brock Wheat or Goslin
CF Puckett Roush
RF Keeler Crawford
P Pennock Newhouser

* There's no obvious choice here. Feel free to substitute Carter or
Fisk
or ...I think I could be persuaded to go with Dickey or Fisk.

Obviously none of them are mistakes.

Keeler's the easiest to explain. At the time he was voted
in 19th century record keeping was in shambles. The writers
simply thought he was better than he turned out to be.
(To give you some idea of how bad it was, at one point Cap
Anson was widely believed to have over 4,000 hits. A truly
significant error)

And he's not a *bad* player. He'd be a typical VC pick.

Maranville almost certainly got in because of his personal
popularity, but he was a truly great glove man. Did
not adapt well to the new offensive conditions and still
lasted quite some time. Only HOFer I can think of
to spend extensive time in the minors in the middle
of his career.

Obviously you can justify Traynor (though I think
Stan hack is the better player) because there's the huge
gap between Baker and Mathews without him. Not
a HOF case I care for, but I do understand the argument.

So then you are a kid. By 1965, I had already watched the Yankees
win 4 World Series, and lose 4.

There is no committee. Just a pimp for Pete the Fixer
who has already admitted that he did bet on the Reds
which is by definition grounds for a lifetime ban. It's
only a matter of time before he admits he bet against
the Reds.

When Rose dies, he can play on a team with Chick Gandil
and Swede Risberg.

Wouldn't have figured you for this kind of response Bob -- unless
your objection is that whatever Rose may have done it's not
in the same league as Gandil.

In which case I agree. Gandil was a special kind of scum.
Not only was he the point man for the fix, but he stole
from his co-conspirators (the Black Sox got almost all
of the money they'd been promised, most of it ended up
with Gandil) and then tried to get Collins and Schalk
(and others) banned a few years later.

Well Ron, I happen to know more about the Rose situation than most. He did
what he did. When people try to pile on to that, it irritates me. Most of
the time these days, it's people that don't know him, or for that matter
ever even saw him play.

I will admit that I defend Pete to a fault. There is nobody on this earth
that I would rather sit and talk baseball with.

What Pete did was bad enough, without exaggerating the circumstances. There
have been plenty of gamblers in and around pro sports. They just didn't get
caught.

What Tim Donaghy did was exponentially worse than Rose, yet you don't really
don't see or hear him being drug through the mud like Pete Rose.

To the original post...........that Rose Committee thing. It has greatly
amazed me that people lend those posts any credence or feel the need to
comment. Why click on them at all? That guy posts that crap, and it
constantly brings pointless spew about Pete Rose.

Aside...................I haven't run across any posts from Dan. Where has
he been?

There's Dan! Comcast is doing away with newsgroups. They have dwindled to
muck anyway. But, I will miss the stuff that I have picked up from the two
of you.

Primer??? on usenet? or elsewhere?

this place used to be truly terrific...but now all the brainiacs
have left, leaving us with idiots like rosecomm (jeez, even
maynard doesn't show up much anymore...unless he's also rosecomm
....certainly their "witty rejoinders" are similar. hmmmmm...has
anybody ever thought of doing similarity scores for RSB posters?)

Quite right. What Gandil did was in the American League,
whereas Rose was a career National Leaguer. Not in the
same league, at all.

Bless you, Bob.

I think we may have been on opposing views in a few discussions in the
past, but you hit the nail on the head as to how I feel about Pete
Rose.

Just wish I could have come up with your wording.

It's official name is

baseballthinkfactory.org (though baseballprimer.com works too)

Dan does the Transaction Oracle and runs it day to day.

Time Warner did away with newsgroups, too, which is why I use Google
Groups. Usenet's kinda really dwindled and admittedly, we have a very
good crowd of ex-useneters. I just don't plug the site on usenet
since I feel that it's contrary to the non-commercial purpose of
usenet. You could still access it on Google Groups, too.
