View Full Version : CC Sabathia on Free Agency
Met-in-PR 10-08-2008, 01:12 AM From the NY POST:
-----
Lefty Likely On Radar Of Mets, Yanks
"Sabathia smiled when told Mets fans are dreaming of a starting
rotation that begins with him and Johan Santana.
"That sounds good," the premier free agent pitcher of this winter told
The Post.
The 28-year-old's season came to a close yesterday when the Brewers
lost to the Phillies, 6-2 in Game 4 of the NLDS. He never got the
chance to pitch Game 5, instead his final appearance of 2008 coming as
a pinch hitter (he struck out).
Now he embarks on the free agency trail, where he probably will fetch
around $150 million. Both the Mets and Yankees are expected to be
players in the Sabathia sweepstakes, but the big left-hander sounds
lukewarm about leaving his native California for the East Coast.
"I like it there," he said of New York, "but we'll have to see what
direction the teams are going and would my family be uncomfortable
being on a whole other coast? We'll have to see."
Sabathia's wife Amber is due to give birth on Friday, so he said he
probably will wait a few weeks before talking with agent Greg Genske
about the plan for this winter. He does know he doesn't want the
decision to take all winter.
"I want to get it done pretty quick," Sabathia said. "I try to be as
stress free as possible. All that is is stress having it drag on all
winter. We'll see what happens."
Sabathia said don't expect him to do one of those whirlwind free
agency tours.
"I can guarantee you I won't be flying around, going to different
cities," he said. "I've pretty much been to every city in the league.
I've got a lot of friends around the league. They're going to have to
come to me. I won't be spending my offseason flying around to
different cities." "

The most amazing trade was the CC deal. Milwaukeee does not appear to be
even interested in resigning him after sending the highly regarded La
Porta to get him. As if their interest matters.
I am glad we did not sell out F Mart who is less highly regarded or
experienced for half a season of a player.

Blackjet76, I guess I'm one of the nuts. I would love to see the Mets get
C.C. But need I don't think so.
Had Maine stayed healthy our starting rotation was good enough to go all the
way had the rest of the team pulled there share of the load.
If the Mets lose Perez and opt. not to bring Pedro back they will need to
add starting pitching but that will not be a priority.
1st priority will be to get a closer and add quality to the bullpen.
2nd. Add a clutch bat.
After that of Wilpon want to spend the money go after C.C. but I don't think
the Mets are done in 2009 if they don't add C.C. but they are done in 2009
if they don't improve the bullpen.

I think I'd rank it this way . . .
1. Bullpen
2. Where does Daniel Murphy play?
3. Depending on the answer to #2, some combination of 2B, LF, RF, C.
4. Starting pitching depth, assuming Ollie Perez takes the money and
runs.
5. Bench (it would be a nice change to have one)

I agree on #1
Murphy, depends on what the Mets do with Delgado. I whould not sign Delgado
to any extentions but I would have to bring him back for his option year.
That Means Murphy plays left. I know that is not perfect. I don't want to
see the Mets block Martinez's path. I would like to give him 1 more year. If
he has another disapointing year then commit to someone else long term.
I think Church is acceptable in RF. He had injuries this season but they
were unusual type of injuries so I don't think that will repeat in 09.
2b we're stuck with Castillo's contract for three more years. We also have
Reyes. Unless a Joe Morgan type become available I don't think the Mets will
do anything here.
Starting pitching depth is very important we need to sign 2 of our own,
Pedro and Perez or bring in 2 more from else where or any combination. I
would like to see Neise in AAA as our sixth starter and not our 5th. He can
be our 5th in 2010.

Agree. Should be a priority. Just need to watch the playoffs to see
how relievers have been key in games. I have a feeling Omar will trade
Delgado this winter to get some strong arms for pen, maybe a catcher
for the future and free some money from the payroll.
> 2. Where does Daniel Murphy play?
I expect him at 2B. He played 3B most of his career, started making
the changed early this year and will play Winter Baseball.
> 3. Depending on the answer to #2, some combination of 2B, LF, RF, C.
Don't be surprise to see Ibaņez as stop gap until F Martinez is ready
(specially if Murphy plays well at 2B in the AFL and WB) . As for RF,I
don't mind Church if Minaya fills other holes. But not sure if the
Mets should depend on RC. I like the way Church plays and his
commitment, but not sure if is either bad luck or lack of opportunity,
but he hasn't been able to put a full season together. Can he finally
do it in 2009?

We have to wait and see what happens. But I have a feeling everything
will start with a trade of Delgado (Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Johan,
Pelfrey, Maine are here for the long haul) to improve some of the
holes mentioned above. And knowing Minaya's aggressiveness in Free
Agency, I wouldn't be sock if it ends with Minaya either pursuing
Sabathia or Texeira. Not sure if he will sign 1 of the 2 big tickets,
but he will make a push with added payroll flexibility ($45M after
trading Delgado).
It's going to be a busy winter!! And that's good, becuase it means a
lot of baseball news!!
LGM 2009!!

According to Ron Darling, he thinks the Mets will re-sign him. Interesting,
I thought.

Raid the Phillies bench.

Agree. Should be a priority. Just need to watch the playoffs to see
how relievers have been key in games. I have a feeling Omar will trade
Delgado this winter to get some strong arms for pen, maybe a catcher
for the future and free some money from the payroll.
************************************************************************
Delgado has an option for 2009. The Mets can buy out his contract and let
him walk now. That will cost 4 million. They can bring him back under his
option year at 16 million.
Accepting his option and then trading him will not happen. Make a list of
teams who need a 1st baseman. Cross off that list teams who will not pay 16
million to a 1st baseman. You now have a very small list. Now of the team or
two that may be left, what would they be willing to give for a player who is
a free agent at the end of 2009. A player who had 2 torrid months in 08 but
was worthless for 6 month in 07 and 4 months in 08. If Omar want to save
money at 1st base to use else where he will let Delgado walk and play Murphy
at 1st base. Maybe Evens shares some time with Murphy there.
****************************************************************************
> 4. Starting pitching depth, assuming Ollie Perez takes the money and

We have to wait and see what happens. But I have a feeling everything
will start with a trade of Delgado (Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Johan,
Pelfrey, Maine are here for the long haul) to improve some of the
holes mentioned above. And knowing Minaya's aggressiveness in Free
Agency, I wouldn't be sock if it ends with Minaya either pursuing
Sabathia or Texeira. Not sure if he will sign 1 of the 2 big tickets,
but he will make a push with added payroll flexibility ($45M after
trading Delgado).
It's going to be a busy winter!! And that's good, becuase it means a
lot of baseball news!!

Dude, there will be teams lining up to trade relievers for a veteran
player who just hit .271/.353/.518/38hr/115rbi, and carry the Mets for
the last three months of the season. They won't mind getting a 1 year
1B and then get draft picks at the end of his contract. If the season
would have been different (hot at the beginning and cold at the end),
then you have a point. But right now, Delgado's value is sky high.
You can say all you want about 2007 and start of 2008, but at the end
he answered all questions?
Can he catch up with fastballs? YES
Has his bat slowdown? NO
Can he carry a team on his back? YES
Can he be a middle of the order hitter? YES
That's all Minaya will need to get value in return.

How many reliever or prospects did they give up for Piazza. I forgot who did
they trade for him.
How about for Frank Thomas. Billy Beane hasn't traded away many prospects or
relievers as far a I
can tell.
I do hope your right and I'm wrong. I have a feeling we will never find out
though. If you are right
I gree with you. Sign him and trade him and put Murphy at 1st. Actually I
don't know where you stand
with Murphy at 1st but we agree, trade Delgado.
I have a feeling Omar will not do that. He will pickup his option and hold
on to him. My feeling
is that we will see the same mix for the starting 8 positions in the start
of 09 as we saw at the end of 08.
Omar has to make big changes in the bullpen. It's the right thing to do and
fan pressure is to great.
He has to sign Perez and Martinez or replace them. Niese is not the answer
yet. I love his stuff much like
I loved Pelfrey's stuff a couple of years ago but like I said then with
Pelfrey I am saying now with Niese.
He is a year or 2 from being a quality starter. If he starts with the Mets
in 08 he will lose a couple of games
and this group will want to bury him.

Try this
1. Draft choices or prospects, especially at catching
2. Ballpen
3. Bench
4. Signing or replacing Perez
5. Murphy plays where ever he wants that is not 3rd, SS or CF
6. Breaking in Niese.
7. exploring a Delgado trade

I know spam is a big word for you but please try to use it right. Spam is
multiple copies of the same message e-mailed or posted to a number of groups
or individuals. Each of my messages have only been posted once. I realize
this is a Mets newsgroup and I can see you don't like non Met stuff by me
posted here. However since you have never objected to any other non Mets
stuff to bad. I will continue to exercise my rights as an American and post
what I like where I like. If you don't like it learn how to use the "block
sender" tool and block all messages sent by me.

I was looking at Piazza and Thomas from the money and age stand point
(using a veteran to help young players during the season). While it
doesn't happen often, there are some instances where A's have traded
relievers or minor leaguers for aging/struggling player:
1999 - A's traded Jeff D'Amico, Brad Rigby and Blake Stein to KC for
Kevin Appier
2001 - A's traded Mark Guthrie and Tyler Yates NYM for David Justice
2002 - A's traded Daylon Holt, Neal Cotts to CHW for Keith Foulke,
Mark Johnson and Joe Valentine
2004 - A's traded Mark Redman, Arthur Rhodes for Jason Kendall
Again, I'm not implying the Mets should get Top prospects or an All
Star in return but rather bring some bullpen arms and free some money.

My first option for Murphy is 2B, then 1B. I think it's more difficult
to find a 2B that can hit like Murphy than a 1B. The again, they can
use Murphy at 1B (with Tatis/Evans giving him the day off), but will
have to compensate offensively at second base (sign O Hudson?) and LF
(sign Ibaņez as stop gap until F Martinez is ready?) to cover
Delgado's production.
Reyes, Hudson, Beltran, Wright, Ibaņez, Church, Murphy/Evans/Tatis,
Schneider/Castro doesn't sound bad offensively and defensively.

As you said, he needs to make big changes in the pen, and that
includes a Closer. In Free Agency there are only a few guys that could
change the Mets bullpen:
F Rodriguez (who I wouldn't touch)
B Fuentes (I think Omar should go hard after him)
K Wood (can't see him leave the Cubs)
J Bemiel
J Cruz
J Alffeldt
W Ohman
D Reyes
Out of those relievers, I would only make a bid for Fuentes and Cruz.
The rest of the bullpen has to be filled with talent from the minors
and trades. Can he find a closer via trade? Will Seattle trade JJ
Putz, who is a FA after 2009 and have young B Morrow who saved 10 games
this year? Should they go after H Street from Oak or Soria from KC?
Should they take a chance on an emotional closer like Valverde? Could
BJ Ryan be available with J Accardo coming back? And the final
question, what's the cost?
Fuentes
J Cruz
Ayala (Just like relievers who get into games and throw strikes)
Parnell or Kunz
J Smith
Feliciano
Heilman, Schoeneweis and Sanchez? Will probably be part of a package
(maybe with Delgado) or traded for relievers who had bad seasons, but
were successful in the past or that have struggled but had some
potential: Betancourt from Cle, S Rivera from Wsh, J Benoit from Tex,
B Seay, F Rodney or Z Miner from Det, L Vizcaino from Col, J Rauch
from Ari come to my mind. That will be the Mets gambling like they did
with Ayala.
That's why I think he will use Delgado to fix the pen, and free some
money to pursue those Big Ticket FA Minaya likes (Texeira, Sabathia, M
Ramirez, B Abreu, D Lowe). Who should he sign if they unload Delgado's
contract, that's another thread!! ;-)

Has there been any rumors about Perez? With Boras as agent, I just
feel he is as good as gone. But if the price is right I wouldn't mind
having him back. Pedro, only if it's a low base salary and incentive
loaded type of deal. Having said that, I think we'll see Pedro back as
a #5 starter. At his age and the way he is, I don't see him moving to
another organization to finish his career.

Agree. Of course, I wouldn't mind see him as a #5 starter if the Mets
get Sabathia and strengthen the first 4 spots (Santana, Pelfrey,
Sabathia, Maine)!! But that's a long shot.
