Goodbye
Yep, Mets are from the Bizarro World where up is down, in is out.
Jerry Manuel gets a 2 year contract for blowing a lead in the last 2
weeks of the season!
Maybe if he finished in last place he'd have gotten a 10 year deal!

And Omar gets 4 years for the missing the playoffs with the largest
payroll in the NL, for not addressing aged ball players who get hurt,
for not addressing a weak bull pen (and worse, getting rid of productive
players who could have helped), for his handling the managership (both
the firing of Willie and its timing) and the fact this team does not
rise to the occasion.

Bizarro world indeed.

If Jerry had managed the whole season, given his win rate after taking
over the team, they would have had about 96 wins, 4th best in the
majors and way out in front in the NL East. There's reason to believe
they would have likely folded in the playoffs, wilting the way they
did with the season on the line. Nevertheless, he provided an almost
immediate boost to this team. Unless you have proven top level manager
in line to take his place, a fairly modest 2 year contract seems like
a no brainer.

Nothing Manuel did would have changed the first half of the season.

We'll never know, but I disagree. I think this team would have had a better
April and May if Willie were trashed in October last year. It would have
sent a message, and the team would not have had to deal with the collapse
talk as much as they did, and have to listen to Willie spin as much as he
did in spring training.

Would they still have blown 29 saves? Probably! <g> Still, you can say it
would have made no difference, I can say it would have, but the bottom line
is that no one can say for sure one way or another.

You could look at the calender and you can see that the team was beginning
to improve up until the day they canned Randolph. As he started to
stretch the starting pitching, the pitchers responded.

In the end, what was he supposed to do? He had to throw Heilman out
there, and Wagner, just as Manuel did.

The one big difference was that Delgado came alive, but he was also
showing signs of life. They couldn't win with the peices they had, and
Randolph had to use them...and so did Jerry.

I'm not sold on this guy. I'd had like to have seen Oberkfeld possibly
take over and I wouldn't be suprised one bit if he ends up being the
Manager before the Manuel contract runs out.

Well, only to a low-grade moron like you would that answer seem non-
responsive.
A check of the September standings find the Mutts going from
contenders to zeroes. If the manager is to be praised for winning,
even a shithead like you would have to allow that it follows that the
manager must take the blame for losing.
But logic doesn't seem to be your strong point, does it, Mary?

I disagree. One more game and we would have still trailed the Phils and
still not even backed in as a WC. We would have needed two wins for that.

And, some of us whiney little dopes posted before the debacle unfolded
that not winning the division after having a three game lead in
September would still be failure.

It was.

No, it wasn't. They cleaned up on the crap teams and stubled against
Florida and Chicago, and frankly, I had a strong feeling that was going to
happen.

And as a FACT, the Vegas odds for the Mets when they were 3 games up at
were only SLIGHTLY in the Mets favor to make the playoffs.

So somebody seemed to know something all the whining bastards didn't know.

You wouldn't know logic if it bit you in the ass.

"If the manager is to be praised for winning,
even a shithead like you would have to allow that it follows that the
manager must take the blame for losing."

Um, no, moron. It doesn't. If, for example, the manager changed the
line-up to a more productive one. If he changed the bullpen-use
strategy to one that worked better. If he benched a non-productive
player for one who came through when needed. Then, he would be
praised for winning.

If, for example, the bullpen closer was lost to injury. If a major
player stopped hitting. If players made stuopid moves on the
basepaths and in the field. How would any of this be the manager's
fault?

Of course, following this reasoning actually takes, uh, reasoning.
Which you are not capable of.

Go home. Your village is missing its idiot and is very sad that they
dont have to kick around anymore. They replaced you with a bag of cow
shit.

I am not a martyr. I root for a team whose commitment to winning is
suspect. Keeping Randolph this year after the worst collapse in history,
then keeping Manuel after another collapse, and getting in bed with Omar
for the next four years after he failed to provide for a bull pen or
depth makes me wonder.

Why was a 2 year commitment OK for Manuel but not for Omar?

I agree that Delgado was the main reason why the Mets were even in the
playoff hunt. But Jerry Manuel from the beginning of the season could
have made a difference. Huge difference? we'll never know. But once
Willie was fired, he was instrumental in relaxing the players. Manuel
also went "Back to Basics" on the field. How much did the Mets defense
improved with Jerry? He benched Castillo (something Willie wouldn't
have done it), sent msgs to players like Castro who had nagging
injuries, really did not let Maine get into a game during the stretch
(probably saving his future). He played the best hand and didn't care
about contracts.

Again, the intangible values is what got him the contract extension.

This is a team that, once Wagner went down. couldn't be trusted to

team with such an obvious, glaring weakness should be good enough
to win a division, let alone accomplish anything in the postseason?

A team whose commitment to winning is suspect doesn't go out and
commit over $100 million to a Johan Santana. If you want to
question their judgment, that's one thing, but to suggest that they
aren't committed to winning is unfair and short-sighted.

>Keeping Randolph this year after the worst collapse in history,

That was a judgment call, and in retrospect, probably a bad one. That
said, my thought at the time was that he deserved another chance.

>then keeping Manuel after another collapse,

This was not a 2007-style collapse. Manuel took over a team that
was dead in the water and brought it back into contention, despite a
series of crippling injuries to his pitching staff. The fact that
those injuries proved too much to overcome in the end doesn't change
the fact that under Manuel, the team played at a near .600 pace and
displayed an energy and a resilience that we didn't see under his
predecessor earlier in the season.

If you were that dissatisfied with Manuel, though, who would you have
brought in as manager? And please, for the love of God, don't say
Bobby Valentine.

I'll blame Omar for the pitifully weak bench that the Mets had
assembled at the start of the season, but if we're going to do that,
we also have to give him credit for finding guys like Tatis, Murphy
and Evans to plug the holes as the year went along. As for the
bullpen, of course it was an epic disaster this season, but should
Minaya really have foreseen that previously-reliable relievers like
Heilman and Feliciano would implode completely, or that Billy Wagner
would break down in August? Heilman's utter disintegration, in
particular, probably did more to undermine this team's chances than
anything else this season.

>Why was a 2 year commitment OK for Manuel but not for Omar?

Because in Omar's case, there's more of a track record to assess,
and the fact is that he's made this a much better organization than it
was when he took over. Think back to what this organization looked
like in 2004 -- an aging Mike Piazza at first base, Richard Hidalgo
and Mike Cameron in the outfield, Kaz Matsui at short, and relics like
Al Leiter and Tom Glavine carrying the starting rotation. Today,
incredibly, the Mets have four starters under the age of 30, they've
managed to hold on to cornerstone players like Reyes and Wright
while adding players like Delgado, Beltran and Santana to the mix, ,
and the minor league system is the strongest it's been in several
years. We can all point to various mistakes he's made, and there
have been plenty of them, but this is still a solid organization that
should be a consistent contender for years to come, and I don't
think anyone could have said that about the Mets back in 2004.
And Minaya is the guy who made it happen.

Clearly, you're a masocist who just loves getting his ass kicked, and
who keeps coming back for more and more. Unfortunately for you,
though, you're a repetitively boring, moronic asshole and I've lost
interest in beating you black and blue.

Dismissed.

Tell me how that makes any sense. They didn't have a 2nd baseman, a LF,
no ballpen, and their number 2 starter went down. In addition to that,
their number 3 starter was being pushed past his endurance point and the
number 1 starter had to return on 3 days rest and the number 5 starter,
Martinez, wasn't returning from injury with any affectiveness.

Oh - their catcher sucks as well and their bunch was thinned out when they
lost Tatis.

In addition to that, the brewers has nearly a 70 POFf of making
the wildcard or playoffs just prior to the 3 games against Philidephia.

You should kiss the Brewers ASS for crashing so hard down the stretch
otherswise they'd had almost NO chance of winning.

I'm just sick of your whining. A whole season went buy and you enjoyed
NOTHING.

Enjoy what you got because by rights, in July they had NO SHOT at the
playoffs at all.

You and Mets-in-PR can go fishing for another 39 year old OFer. That will
turn this team into a juganut.

bitch bitch bitch...that's all you hear. I hate it. Why do you even
watch? Your worse than a Yankee fan. You can't enjoy anything of the
sport unless your team sweeps into the playoffs in 12 straight wins.

The commitment is supsect? They just added 4 good near rookies to the
roster who all look like gamers and then added Santana as well.

Maybe if they go an sign another old fart or Barry Bonds even, then you'd
be satisfied.

Cutting wit? Jesus Christ, you are one stoopid son of a bitch.
You're half-right though. (Get it?)

Yep. Declare victory and move along. It's your only chance. Wait.
Scratch that. You don't have a chance in hell.

You really shouldn't refer to yourself as a fuckwit, Mary.

I admit it!
I'm a big fruit, not to mention being a complete moron.
I once got arrested in the men's room of a rest stop on the NJ Turnpike for impersonating a urinal!
