The upshot is our talent is now being poached by the Auusies as well as
everyone else.

One plays to one's strengths if one is sensible. And if one is
Australian, taking that which is not yours is most assuredly a strong
suit...

Great article: it claims "a number of promising New Zealanders who haven't
yet made their mark have been poached" but fails to name a single player.
Incidentally, if I hear the phrase "marquee player" ever again it will be
too soon - rugby is not played in a tent! It ranks alongside "short-arm
penalty" (which sadly most NZ commentators are now using when they mean
"free kick") as Australian 'contributions' to the language. Yuck.

He also failed to name a single Australian province.

Sigh. If only we could implement a quota for *all* incoming Kiwis...
Admittedly the club bouncer, building and social service industries would
be hard hit, but that's a sacrifice I'd be more than willing to make.
Thought!: Alternatively.... Perhaps Oz could free up some spots for social
climbing Kiwis by deporting those long-stay Kiwis who've been ungrateful
enough not to take out Oz citizenship?

Then I suggest you pay people more. For years you've done very well out of
the poly playing pool when their parents came for a better life, or they
were offered scholarships. It's no different, simply economic migration.
Please don't think this is a raping the PI post - it isn't. England are
raping plenty at the moment.

I think we would if we could Simon, we just can't match the overseas
offers.
And sometimes a lad just has to go and have alook at another lifestyle. Stay
at home money can't buy that.

This makes good sense given that he appeared to be playing for Australia in
the Bledisloe Cup match at Sydney anyway.

Soooo if that's the best Queensland can do, no worries in the S14 there

I appreciate that your population is small, but the percentage of them that
follow rugby is not. The area that is closest to being like NZ is mine and
Didges neck of the woods - the West Country. We have very little time for
football down there compared to the rest of the country. If we were to do an
analysis of population centres - Bath, Bristol and Gloucester have a
combined total population of about 660k (roughly half of Auckland, or
slightly more than Cantebury). From this, we field 3 GP teams who (with the
exception of Bristol who play in a football stadium) sell out for every
game.
In terms of TV money, rugby here is largely shown on Sky. I am just as
likely to turn on the TV and see an Air NZ or Currie Cup match than I am a
GP one. If there's one nation that's getting the short end of the TV deal,
it would appear to me to be Aus, whose games we never get (S14 aside). The
fact that you lads 'cannot' match the overseas offers basically says one
thing to me - someone somewhere isn't sharing the wealth. Sort that out and
your exodus will end.
As far as lifestyle goes, I'd swap Northampton for NZ in a hearbeat. If the
money allowed, I'd leave tomorrow, and I'm sure a fair few players would as
well.

I take your point about relative playing numbers Simon. But it's the size of
the TV market that generates the revenue. In the UK and Europe you have
access to how many viewers?

SH competitions are shown over here as well, so the size of your TV
market is big. I can only find viewing figures for 2 years ago, but
the morning games (SH) have about 15% less audience than the afternoon
(NH) games. As I say, I watch the Currie Cup and Air NZ because they
are on before life gets in the way, as it does in the afternoon.
Admittedly life often means going to a game, but then I'm not watching
the TV at all. Either you've got a total muppet selling your product,
or someone has their hands in the till.
