49ers notes: Sims has escaped the 'circus' in Oakland
Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Nevertheless, the 49ers' current starting right tackle was asked about
the latest developments on the other side of the bay.
"It's a circus," he said.
On Tom Cable being promoted to interim head coach, Sims said about his
former offensive line coach, "If it seems to be a good time (to make
the move), Tom can be the guy. He's got a way about himself that
players like and respect. You can see what it's done for their
offensive line. Everybody has respect for him over there."
That's more than Mike Nolan said about the subject. Asked to comment
on the Tuesday firing of Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, the 49ers' coach
declined.
"I respect your question, but no," Nolan said.
More Lawson: Outside linebacker Manny Lawson was two games into a
promising 2007 season when he tore ligaments in his knee and was done
for the year. With his knee now healthy, he has been used sparingly or
not at all through the first four games. A hamstring strain incurred
in the loss at New Orleans will keep him out of this week's New
England game.
"As we go forward, Manny will play more and more," Nolan said. "I
wouldn't read anything into it at this point. Manny is a good player
and we need to get him on the field, no question."
Travel time: The Patriots will arrive in San Francisco on Friday for
the game and plan to stay awhile. They play the Chargers in San Diego
on Oct. 12 and will stay in San Jose through next week instead of
making two cross-country trips in a week.
"It does save the travel," Nolan said. "On the West Coast, one thing
is consistent is that you have pretty good weather."
Briefly: Along with Lawson, tackle Jonas Jennings (shoulder) and
cornerback Shawntae Spencer (knee) are out of the New England game.
.... Running back Frank Gore sat out Wednesday's practice to rest as
DeShaun Foster and Michael Robinson took the reps.
