The Raptors signed free-agent forward Jamal Sampson, a cousin of Ralph
Sampson who is expected to give Toronto frontcourt depth after the loss of
Nathan Jawai.
The Raptors announced Monday that Jawai will be held out of practice because
of concerns from a routine cardiac screening.

Kudos to the Raptor's medical staff for screening your draft picks so
thoroughly. No wait, I mean - fire your medical staff for screwing this up.

Raptor president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said there was no way
the team was going to take chances after the test results.
"We're going to get him in front of another specialist here this week and
hopefully we'll have some better news by the end of the week," he said. "For
now, you take the precautionary route and I think the prudence is to hold
him out of practice until we're 100 per cent certain what we're dealing
with."
....
and
....
To replace Jawai on the training camp roster, the Raptors have signed
journeyman centre Jamal Sampson to a non-guaranteed contract. If Jawai is
cleared, Sampson will be released and the Raptors will be back to a 13-man
roster.

I've been following Jamal Sampson's career ever since we signed him so
I know a thing or two about him. Based on my extensive knowledge of
him I can tell you that he is going to make a major contribution to
our team. He is an expert in textile engineering and will be
excellent at providing his teammates with textiles such as face
towels, full length towels, and kleenexes for when they need to wipe
some snot. As well, I know for a fact that Jamal is tall, and thus
will be able to project his voice over the other patrons at Starbucks
when making orders for his teammates.

IIRC they did not draft him the pacers did. This is likely the first
time the doctors have seen him.
2nd round picks usually do not have guaranteed contracts. You begrudge
the team paying him in camp while the check out his heart?
In the same situation and with a career ending prognosis the Lakers paid
for Turiaf's heart surgery and it worked out pretty well when he was
able to play.
Nice for your heartfelt concern...=)
