General manager John Mozeliak declined to discuss details but
confirmed negotiating with Lohse's representative. Multiple sources
indicated that the deal could be similar to the four-year, $48 million
contract signed by Carlos Silva with Seattle last winter, and that the
average annual value of Lohse's deal will exceed $10 million.

The Cardinals have scheduled a news conference for 4:30 p.m. today
(FSN Midwest).

==========

This is just horrible news. Lohse will be 30 next season; he's a
league average starting pitcher coming off his best season (113 ERA+),
who regressed to his usual form in the second half. And they're going
to pay him $12 million per season? I'm beginning to lose faith in
Mozieliak's judgment.

12M/year is more like what I was thinking. That's a horrible contract over
4 years. That makes Jason Marquis' contract with the Cubs look like a
steal. LOL.

Apparently, it's "only" $41 million. "His new deal contract calls for
a $1.25 million signing bonus and salaries of $7,125,000 next year,
$8,875,000 in 2009 and $11,875,000 in each of the final two seasons.
He also gets a full no-trade clause."

Still terrible.

Lohse was basically signed for the going rate for starting pitchers.
Mo is simply a realist.

$8.25 mil. in '09 with a lower total of $41 million over
the 4 yrs.

"According to the Associated Press, Lohse's deal is
significantly backloaded and pays him $7.125 million in 2009 with a $1.25
million signing bonus, with his base salary climbing to $11.875 million in
2011 and 2012. That structure could conceivably allow the Cardinals to be
more aggressive in the near term than if Lohse were making $10 million each
year."

This is almost the same contract Suppan got from the Brewers (that the
Cardinals wouldn't go for) a year ago. The Cardinals have more money
available now that a few of the big contracts - Izzy, Encarnacion, Mulder (I
can't imagine they'll pick up the option) are done, and Lohse did have a
better year in 2008 than Suppan had in 2007. Still, I wonder how it makes
Adam Wainwright (4 years, $15M) feel.

Status of Cards' player contracts can be found here:
