Hey Beastfish, I'm a Mets fan, the "BreastFish" troll is not. New
Yorkers are definitely not happy, but no one is really thinking much
about Philly right now, much less trying to post idiotic stuff like
the "BreastFish" troll. In fact, he's been trolling the Mets group as
well.

If anything, Mets fans want another matchup with the Marlins next year
when the team has all hands on deck. As for Philly winning the
division---In some ways, the Mets would have been better off as the
wildcard since Maine and Wagner are DL'd. We would have had a better
chance against the Cubs' lineup in best of five. Santana could have
pitched two of the games, possibly 9 innings, so less worry about the
bullpen. The Dodgers and Phillies would be tough, and the Phils have
serious momentum, but the Cubs (IMO) have the best overall team in the
division.

Anyway, a couple of the Phillies fans were cool during the season so I
stopped in to say good luck. Surprised to see that "Breastfish" is
pretending to be a Mets fan. Don't let him get to you.

Oh, I don't let trolls get to me (even though that particular troll has some
sort of obsession). I've been doin' UseNet a loooong time :-)

My dad is a Mets fan (been one since their inception), so I've never really
hated the Mets... more of a good natured fun-poking thing. And with him
having health issues in recent years, the Mets getting the wildcard would
have provided some joy and excitement for him, and thus fine with me. Come
to think of it, I don't really hate any baseball team. After all, it's
baseball, not football. And I always welcome civil discourse with baseball
fans of any team.

With regards to Wagner, the reason the Phils didn't resign him was basically
what has transpired... at the time, even though the money was about the
same, Wagner wanted 4 years and the Phils didn't want to go that long. The
opinion of the Phils doctor was that Wagner was vulnerable to arm issues,
and felt that after two years, he'd lose velocity, decline, etc.
Fortunately for the Phils (unfortunately for the Mets), it seems they may
have made an accurate assessment.

A Mets/Marlins rematch next season may not be all that's hoped to be. The
Fish have 18 arb eligible guys. Depending on how the arbitrations go, with
their cheap budget, they may be dumping some talent. It's possible they
won't be any better than AAAA caliber next year.

The Phils ~should~ be tough next season. Of course that depends on some
factors. I like that Marson kid's potential. Spent season at AA, September
call-up, Olympic baseball team (HR in gold medal game). Good defensive
catcher. Made his ML debut Sunday, got 2 hits (1 HR). With catching being
a position of need, I hope he gets the chance to make the team out of spring
training. I'd like to see them resign Burrell. He wants to stay in Philly,
but I think they'd need to get a deal done before FA filings because I can
see the Mets making a serious play for him (since they could use a LF with a
productive bat). I'm hoping Burrell has a huge post season, then the Phils
would ~have~ to resign him <g>

But hey, we still got some 2008 baseball left, with the Phils facing the
Brewers tomorrow afternoon :-)
