Comcast without fanfare and without much forewarning is eliminating
their news access. For those millions who say their customer service
sux, yes they do.

I can't goose enough of you guys to talk regularly enough to justify
paying for it, so does anyone know of a free news server feed that
carries this group?

Don't like the google alternative. Still like going to usenet thru
good old free agent.

If not I may have to bid an abrupt farewell to you guys on the 21 of
October.

Some time ago I found myself in a similar situation. Geoff Brozny came
to my rescue with a free text based usenet account on one of his
servers. In september of 06 he made such an offer to any regular
participant of this group. I suspect if you contact him and ask nicely,
he'll do the same for you.

geoffATglorbDOTnet worked at the start of the year.

Just fwiw when I investigated free usenet access at the begining of last
year, I found that it wasn't alway free and often involved limitations
that I didn't care for.
I did try aioe and found at that time there service was very slow. 10
minutes to load a couple of small groups.
teranews looks promising, but note that there is a nominal setup fee for
a "free" account now.

I haven't tried it or even gone and looked at their website before
grabbing the link just now, but I've heard people compliment
http://motzarella.org/

I use Forte's Agent as my newsreader and their APN News server. It costs
$2.95/month

Sweet! I'm back! TimeWarner canceled their news service so I've only been
reading through google. Hey, nobody even commented on my absense. :(

I read this article yesterday:
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9116064

I figured that Comcast was just pinching a few pennies by unilaterally
cutting off usenet, but it seems that I have New York to blame, as if
I needed another reason to hate the Yankees.

I'm sure Comcast jumped at the chance to save a few $$$ without being
blamed, but it sucks that the attorney general of NY somehow affects
my computer access in little old WV.

BTW Geoff hooked me up and I'm going to test it today. Thanks for
the tip.

Yep, my new newsfeed work like a charm, so you're not rid of me yet.

Had a few snafus resulting in 1os of thousand of old posts, had to
bacially wipe everything out and start fresh, so any arguments I'm in
will have to start anew when something pops up.

I'm grateful to Geoff for providing this.
