Not too surprising that the Tigers have been swept by the Indians and
now the Royals. Looked at who pitched against the Royals, Miner,
Garcia Robertson. Clearly they are evaluating players for next year
and don't really give a crap about the rest of this season. Tigers
are going to go out just like they came in, on a huge losing streak.
The only meaningful game left on the schedule is a make up game
against the White Sox they might have to play if the Twins and Sox end
up tied after Sunday's games.
Tigers could play all of their Toledo guys in that game and basically
give the Sox the victory and the division thereby repaying the Twins
for Mark Redman.

They can't be tied. The makeup game will be played if the Sox are half a
game ahead or behind.

The Twins could easily find themselves relying on the Tigers to beat
the White Sox in a make-up game in a few days.

As much as it pains me, I can't disagree. I'm a Tigers fan but I agree that
we ended up where we deserved. I haven't watched a complete Tigers game
since late June. The writing has just been on the wall for so long.
I'm no pollyanna but I do try to see a silver lining when I can, just to
keep myself from jumping off a bridge. I'm a polulist at heart, so I am
encouraged when the vaunted end up bested by an underdog (i,e., the rest of
the AL Central). Also, I appreciate good drama so I find it fitting that
the ignoble team that swept our overestimated asses at the start of the
season ended up sweeping us to the gutter at the end.
I just watched the Twins sweep the White Sox. More reason for me to believe
there is a (baseball) God.
Congrats, Scott.

Very doubtful.
The Twins don't need the Tigers for ANYTHING this season.

Thanks. It was a very unexpected season for the Twins. They were
supposed to be in a rebuilding year. I credit it to the excellent farm
system and coaching the Twins have. Plus, they made the best of
some of the trades they were forced into...Carlos Gomez and Delmon
Young have been pleasant surprises.
No matter what happens, the Twins definitely gave their fans one
hell of a season....and it's not over yet!
I think the Tigers can only go up from this season....so there is that
silver lining to look at as well.
Better luck next season, Tigers fans.

Sweeping the White Sox was exactly what the Twins needed to do stay in
the game. However, the Sox will be entertaining the Indians while the
Twins get to play host to the Royals who are on something like a 11
out of their last 12 winning streak.
And if Detroit has to go to Chicago on Monday, they are going to start
Freddie Garcia, so that's a gimme game for the Sox. The Sox will need
to beat the Indians which won't be easy because Cleveland has been
playing very good ball. At least the Sox won't have to face Cliff Lee
who should get the Cy Young Award this season.
As for next season, well the Tigers may only be losing Edgar Renteria
who will be a free agent assuming they don't sign him in the off
season. He has an option. Kyle Farnsworth will also be an FA and even
though Detroit needs pitching, they don't need him.
The Twins, whose owner will most likely not resign anyone who wants
more money stand to lose Nick Punto, Adam Everett, Mike Redmond
(player option), Craig Monroe, Rondell White and pitcher Dennys Reyes.
The only player of note is Punto.
Sox have a ton of players who will be free agents so if they don't get
in the playoffs this season, and I'd really like to see Junior get a
shot at a WS title, this might be it for a while. Their FAs will be
Orlando Cabrera, Alex Cintron, Juan Uribe, Joe Crede, Toby Hall
(player option), and Ken Griffey Jr. (player option).

The Tigers need to bolster their pitching staff, badly. I still
contend that pitching was the Tigers biggest Achilles Heel
this season....although there was plenty of other blame to
go around, too. But, they need to look at another starter
or two, and at least a couple solid middle relievers.

And Punto is really a footnote, IMO. He had a much better season
this time around than the season before, but he's still not a key to
the Twins success, IMO.
The Twins also need to work on bolstering their pitching, namely
the middle relief, more than anything else.

Not me. I'd rather see the ChiSox watching the playoffs from their
TV sets at home. ;-)
>Their FAs will be Orlando Cabrera, Alex Cintron, Juan Uribe, Joe Crede, Toby Hall

The ChiSox (like the Twins) always seem to find a way to be in the
race, so I don't expect next season to be that different. They'll
re-sign their key players and be back.

Yeah, like when they didn't sign Mauer, Morneau, Nathan, and Cuddyer.

Where are you getting your information? Monroe has been gone for
months. White has been gone for over a year. Redmond is signed through
2009. Everett won't be missed. Reyes will be replaced by Jose Mijares.

And the Twins have his clone in Matt Tolbert.

Look here and search for MIN and you'll see where my information,
which is correct, came from. They may not be on the active roster but
they still belong to MIN and will be FA after this season.

Well, the real question is....can they beat the Royals? The answer is
no. They'll lose their season ending series, may even get swept, to
the Royals. Of course the White Sox can't beat the Indians either.
Maybe the Royals and Indians should be playing for the Centrlal
Division title as they're playing the best ball in the month of
September so far. Tigers at least will win their final series, and
may also sweep, the East champion Rays.
