View Full Version : Herm Edwards 2+ Years Later
Da Blue Guy 09-22-2008, 11:50 PM What follows is my analysis of what's going on with the Chiefs, as a 40+
year Chief fan, a NYC resident, and a long time bemused observer of Herm
Edwards since he became Jets Head Coach.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I almost feel sorry for Herm. Almost, only because he's made the team I
love into a disgraceful laughingstock and a horribly boring team. The
boring part was sadly by design. It's all Herm knows. The
laughingstock part is because he is who he is. In one's heart, one
knows when they rise above their level of competence. Herm did, far too
fast, and he knows it. He always knew it. That's why he was always a
performing clown at press conferences, trying to charm the press, while
always dancing around real questions, and always abnormally defensive.
When you're in over your head, you tend to get very, very defensive,
because you're afraid someone is going to expose the truth, that you
have no business being in the job you hold. Watch Sarah Palin if she
ever holds an uncontrolled, open Press Conference, and you'll catch my
drift.
Herm has the gall to take credit for what happened in Tampa Bay on an
equal basis with Tony Dungy, (When Tony and I went down to TB, etc) and
thought he could duplicate it here, building a shutdown defense and
killing both offenses. One BIG difference. He's not Tony Dungy and was
not ever even close to the quality coach Dungy is and was. Dungy was a
successful DC for great D's, before he became a HC. Dungy knew enough
also, after several hard lessons, what he didn't know, and was
determined to not screw up a successful offense in Indy. Herm was a
position coach.. Herm took over a ready made team with the Jets after
the Parcells/Bellichek ownership fiasco and a year of caretaker Al Groh,
and managed to not fully ruin it until 5 years later, although he
certainly had his moments. But any one who REALLY watched him in NY
knew early on he didn't know what he was doing and was totally
overmatched by being a HC in the NFL. His ideas of offense were
archaic, and he was stubborn beyond belief. I tried to warn fellow
Chief fans what was coming, those I know personally and on message
boards/lists. Sadly, so many have told me I was right after initial
resistance. But even I didn't think it would be this bad. I expected
the Offensive futility. It was willful on Herm's part. But His
handmade D isn't playing for him a lick, and that is truly worrisome.
Where I almost feel sorry for Herm is he is about to set all kinds of
coaching records for futility. 12 losses in a row, and a very real
chance to take that into the 20's, will cement his legacy as one of the
worst Head Coaches of all time. On a human level, I like Herm, and I'm
sorry he's going through this, but sorrier he's putting my team though
it. I'd rather it happened to a prick like Parcells or Bellichek, but
the I think part of why they are and were great coaches is because they
are and were heartless pricks.
Let me emphasize, I FULLY support Herm's desire to go almost exclusively
youth, and build it up again. I'll defend it to the wall. It was and
is the right thing to do and I can live through the painful growth of
young players. But they should be playing with passion, for a Head
Coach they believe in. Based on his handpicked D's dreadful
performances against the run, I have to believe they don't. The lack of
mental toughness on this team is beyond appalling. They will wilt if
you give them any excuse to do so. I'm not calling for Herman's
Head(Great TV show cancelled too early), and I think he bought himself
this year "almost" no matter what, but an 0-16 season and 25 losses in a
row may force Clark's hand. I think it'll be a moot point as we steal a
game or 2 down the line when Croyle comes back, IF Croyle is allowed to,
and is confident enough to be who he is, and not what Curl/Herm tried to
turn him into. The rebuild through the draft and young FA's should
continue no matter what, the emphasis on youth should continue no matter
what. And Carl should be fired no matter what.

I couldn't agree more.
you hit the nail right on the head.
Herm, I'm sure , is a really great guy. but he is way over his head as a
head coach.
But we have a very big problem in Kansas City, that is the fact that Carl
Peterson
is so vein and absorbed with himself that he can't admit when he's wrong.
So now were all stuck with him.

I too am a Chiefs fan living in NY (Long Island)..loyal fan since SB
I... I too tried to give the KC fans a heads up when they picked up
Herm. I too met with much resistance. But I refuse to say " I told you
so" because thats not my style anymore. At one time..maybe but no
more..They're listening now.... The Chiefs are a complete embarassment
and Herm is still diplaying that quizzical look on the sidelines that
all Jet fans knew and now all the KC fans know, the look as if he's in
the middle of doing the jumble in the Sunday paper...

I always thought he looked like he was waiting for a bus, and then all
of a sudden noticed that a football game was going on in front of him.

That's because he may not be aware the game has started, because he can't
read a clock.
