View Full Version : Tideway Rowing
vetc1x@hotmail.com 09-15-2008, 09:11 AM (With apologies to non-UK readers)
In a rash moment my doubles partner & I have decided to enter the
Pairs Head. In an even rasher moment we've decided we should
experience the Tideway before the actual race day. I'd be grateful if
the RSR expert panel can help with the following :
1. The PLA 'Code of Practice' is dated 2006: is this still the current
version ?
2. Can anyone point me towards up-to-date information about where
navigation bouys and crossing points are located ?
WTIA

Everything you need is here: http://www.thames-rrc.org/rowing-on-the-thames/navigation-on-the-river-thames/
About 3/4 of the way down on the right is a link to 'Detailed Map'.
That's the best one I know.

Paul [until someone gives you an expert answer]
Have you tried the TRRC and PLA web sites?

nice to hear of a crew wanting to get a grip on the rules before they
come to the Tideway. Please make sure wherever you are boating from
that you have the ok of the club (or if Putney, a club) and that you
have a Boat ID on your 2x
I wouldnt be worried about the Pairs Head, its usually raced in nice
conditons and invariably the weather is very kind
that there is whats called famous last words..........

Welcome to boat from Quintin at the weekend, just let our newly re-
elected committee member Martin Carr on here when you would like to go
down the course.

why does everyone get so scared of the tideway? there have been times
i have been out on it in my single and it has been like a sheet of
glass (ok at 6am or something) it is nowhere near as bad as people
like to make out you know. the thing that freaks people si (a) hearsay
and (b) the fact that when people from non-tideway provincial clubs go
there to row on it it tends to be only for the major heads liek the 8s
head and 4s head etc when there are loads of crews and also 'safety
launches' (note inverted commas there please) churning up the water
and making it worse. Normally it is perfectly ok and rowable, until
those tossers in their coaching launches come out of course and whisk
it all up (from a certain predominantly male club on the putney
embankment usually).
there are fewer entries for the pairs head and so fewer launches
about and as someone else said usually a better time of year with
fewer nasty prevailing weather conditions to make it nasty out there
so you should be ok. Good idea to have a practise on it so you knwo
more of what you are dealing with if youthink it wil make you calmer
and more prepared on the day, but please do not believe all the hype
about it being like the north sea during a hurricane on the tideway
all the time, it just is not true!
best of luck and hope you do not get as many time penalties as i did
when i did it in 2005 (5 apparantly, god knows what for, apart from
the collision with the pair from st pauls next to the bandstand which
was obvious, no clue what the other 4 were all about though)

vetc1x@hotmail.com 09-20-2008, 01:19 PM Thankyou to you all for your posts. We didn't hit anything or anyone,
and no-one shouted at us, so I think we were in the right places at
the right times.
Today was perfect weather, and anyone who was still a-bed should think
themselves accursed they were not on the water. No breeze at all, but
we were close enough to the top of the tide, and buzzed by sufficient
numbers of tin fish, to make the conditions 'interesting' enough for a
couple of up-river softies.
