Dumars hit the manager position like he held the lone hammer of Thor. He
shaped a near worthless roster into a contender it seemed over night,
but his draft choices were bogus.
So was he that good or did he just get lucky?
No one really saw the potenial in the likes of Ben Wallace, he just
wanted something for the fleeing Grant Hill. Billups was a basketball
refugee. Prince was the only legitimate draft choice that panned out.
Sheed was risk and reward type of thing. Did Joe have the insight to
really compose this team or did he just stumble upon a bit of luck?
The records show>>>>>> he got lucky.
There was no need to fired Rick Carlilse, in favor of bringing in Larry
Brown. Brown did nothing to help the Pistons win the NBA title.
Billups said it best, "we were winning before he came here." Brown
later capped it, saying "thank you guys for this." meaning the title.
If Joe seriously knew what he was doing, Brown wouldn't have left and
the franchise would have won at least two more championships. Some kind
of conflict internally arose between Brown and management, it wasn't
simply a desire to coach in his home state. Nobody looks to coach a
losing team.
Brown's not that good anyway, he lost the Olympics with a professional
American team only due to his own stubborness and basketball stupidity.
Joe's accqustion of Saunders as head coach is still a damn mystery.
Absolutely nothing panned out under Flip's reign. We hosted and lost a
bevy of talent, the damn bench was full of league starters, as was the
injury reserve seats and this guy couldn't get us even to the NBA finals
with a weakened depleted Eastern conference. He should have hung at the
hoop and Dumars should have feathered and fired.
Three years in a row an opportunity got away from us folks and fans of
the game. Pity time doesn't stand still and you can't get it back!
Joe's no basketball guru, he's a lucky man, very lucky that Bill's eye
sight isn't what it used to be.
