I lost respect for him after he very publicly didn't give a damn
after wrecking Ray Fosse's shoulder (and career) in the 1970 All Star
game, and his gambling and being in a permanent state of denial
bias me against his being declared eligible for the HOF.

However, giving the devil his due, he was a very good player, if also
a pretty lame excuse for a human being. Yes, the HOF has some first-class
assholes in it (exhibit 1: Ty Cobb), but having a few assholes in the HOF
is no excuse for adding a few more (Rose, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clemens being
modern examples), whose credentials are tainted - Bonds' and Clemens' are
scarred by steroids. Rose's are darkened by gambling. Same difference. They
broke the rules. Nice careers, guys, but too damn bad - you arent going to
Cooperstown.
