And in the NBA too.

Yeah, but in the NBA he would be working alongside of Mop-Girl. That's
priceless.

*sigh*
I'll say it again, because it's true, despite knowing you won't believe
it simply because it's me saying it.
Carl English can play in the NBA. He's no starter, not by a long
stretch, but he can certainly be 8th or 9th man on half the teams in the
league, and with that experience who knows where he could end up?

I'm not saying he can't because it's coming from you, Chris, I
honestly have no idea of knowing if English can play in the NBA. You
might be right, but current evidence (tryouts with several teams)
suggests he can't. But then I look at Milt Palacio having an extended
NBA career and think, Sure, he probably wouldn't embarrass himself
next to some other 12th men. (8th man might be stretching it...)
Heck, if he can make a good living playing ball in Europe, more power
to him. I'd love to be in his shoes...

I think it's funny people make fun of journeyman NBA players. At
least they make the squad. Carl English doesn't even have that yet.
No one here is saying Carl English can't play in the NBA (okay, maybe
Onion Knight is), but he's gonna make far more money in Europe than
he'd ever make in the NBA. Maybe his time in Europe also helps to get
that chip off his shoulder, and in a few years he can come back to the
NBA and actually make a team.

I have one major advantage over all of you: not only have I seen him
play, I've played with and against him. I've seen this man hit 22 shots
in a row in games. He might not be the best defender in the world, but
you cannot say he doesn't put in effort. He loves the game and will take
any knowledge he can get from anyone, anywhere, any time. I posted him
up and was able to score on him because I'm a lefty but I dribble like a
right-hander. He asked me after the game to do the same move on him
again a couple of times until he swatted me across the gym. If someone
scores on him he takes it as an opportunity to learn. He's a good passer
and a decent ball handler, in the NBA those will be his two biggest
opportunities. He reminds me a LOT of Steve Kerr. He seemed to do pretty
well himself.

2 questions:
1. How many tries did it take before he finally stopped you?
2. How many NBA teams have you tried out for?
I don't there's anyone here who doesn't want to see a local boy beat
the odds and make it. Everyone loves an underdog, but let's be real..
how many players in the league are there? Not too many. We're
looking at about 400 highly skilled individuals out of the hundreds of
thousands who play the sport professionally.
Let's figure this out. Let's say an NBA player has on average a 10
year career. Each year 60 more players are drafted, and let's say 60%
of those players actually make the team. So around 35 players are
joining the league every year, and over a 10 year period you have 350
players who joined the league by being drafted. That leaves
approximately 50 players who join the league undrafted in that 10 year
span. This pool of players comes from players who tried out for the
draft but didn't make it, or they're international players. Let's
give Carl a chance and say it goes 75/25 in favor of North American
college players.
So over a span of 10 years, approximately 38 undrafted players made
the league. That means in any given year 3-4 undrafted players
fulfill their dream of making the NBA. Those are pretty shoddy odds
for the undrafted Mr. English. And he's already blown 2 opportunities
to be one of those 3-4 guys who makes it every year. How often are
these knocks on the door going to come along? It seems less and less
likely he'll ever make the NBA.
There's absolutely no shame in playing in Europe. You can make a heck
of a career out of it. I truly believe he can flourish. Maybe in a
few years, when he gets some additional intangibles, he'll have a
shot.
