View Full Version : Quick Musings
user455673 09-08-2008, 03:04 AM Well, I haven't been out here in a while, I figured I'd throw some
thoughts out there after an eventful opening Sunday.
*I thought that the run D we saw today was overall, the best effort
I've seen from a Jets team early in the season in at least a decade.
We all know that the Jets since the Parcells years typically start off
in brutal fashion. Not today. Jenkins was an absolute disruptive
force, and the front 7 in general, did a terrific job against a Miami
running game (namely Ronnie Brown)that usually gashes them (then
again, who hasn't?)
*For some reason, the first few Fish drives, the Jets rushed a minimum
of 3 way too much. Nice to see the Bob Sutton got away from his
conservative streak and released the hounds...until the Jets got up
20-7. But that's another matter.
*Thomas Jones was the best RB on the field today; not even close.
Except for a few dances near the LOS, he hit the line with authority.
I would say as the season progresses, he will love the fact that he
won't have that 8th defender in the box like he faced last year.
*Speaking of the Favre Effect; I think the comment above will be the
biggest plus he will bring to the Jets all season. Watching the Jets D
against Pennington was very familiar:8 in the box, CBs up on the WRs.
If it wasn't for the fact that Eric Smith must;ve had Fasano as his TE
on his fantasy team, the Jets strangled the Fish O. Now, we are
talking about a team that has Ted Ginn as their #1 WR, so you can't go
overboard on the results. But it does show you the difference we will
see in defense's playing the Jets this year.
*Why are the playing Eric Smith over Elam? Incriminating photos? Smith
is best buds with Matt Walsh? Don't get that one.
*I think it might be benficial for Coles to start practicing a bit;
just sayin'. Teams that could really use a WR: Jags,Titans and
Seahawks are just 3 off the top of my head.
*Kudos to the coaching staff for doing just enough to keep the Fins in
the game. I didn't like the fact that on those final 2 drives, the
Jets barely sent more than 1 blitzer towards Pennington. And the
offense? Ugh-lee. Schott's playcalling reminded me of the '03 opener
vs. the Redskins; where the only pass Hermball allowed Vinny T. do was
towards Suzie Kolber. Terrible decision not to allow Favre to get just
one first down and clinch the win.
*What is Morten Andersen up to these days; hell, I'd trust Jim Turner
to come out of retirement right now that not-so Huge Nuge.
* For those who are moaning about how badly they feel about the Jets
win (hi Harlan :-]), remember this, "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!"
Seriously, the Jets got thru a game that many, many times we have seen
past Jets teams gag on. They have a defense that appears to know what
to do once a RB runs towards the line with the ball in his hand, and
they seem to have a couple of CBs who don't believe that a 7 yard
cushion is considered bump-and-run coverage. So cheer up.
*Amazing how one week changes things in the AFC. The Bolts lose a game
they had no business losing, so all of those uneasy feeling re: Norv
Turner will resurface, the Colts so far tonight are looking quite
ordinary, and then there's the matter of that team up in New England.
terrible injury to Brady; and if the reports are true, that's a shame
for any player to face the prospects of trying to come back from that
type of injury. I hope he fully recovers.
That being said, it's hard for a Jets fan who used to see Joe Namath
go down almost yearly to crippling injuries, and of course losing
Vinny T. in the second Q of the first game in '99 to shed any tears.
For those other asfpnyj oldtimers who were out here the day Vinny went
down, reading the newsgroup for the next few weeks was about as brutal
as your typical Jennifer Lopez movie; it was that bad. Karma might
take her time sometimes, but when she does hit back, it can be a
bitch.
*I wonder if Belichick got a good video of the hit.
*Before the season started, all I read was that the Jets absolutely
had to win today, because you could pen in the following 2 games as
losses. While they still might be, anyone think the Jets are unable to
stop Matt Cassel; and if the Panthers can take the Chargers out, who
knows?

Dave, first let me say it is great to have you posting here again. Your
thoughtful and insightful posts have been missing from here too long.
Let me sum up yesterday like this. The Jets won a game that they dominated
for 3 qrts and took the foot off the pedal in the fourth. When was the last
time that happened around here. Normally these let ups turn out to be let
downs. When the Jets were up 20 to 7, my wife sitting next to me said
"Relax, you got this one. Miami is horrible and you know I'm a Fin fan" to
which I answered, "These are still the Jets".
As Miami marched down field on the final drive, she wouldn't even look at my
face. I kept peering into her ear with every Pennington completion. In the
end I said "The Jets are still the Jets, but thankfully Chad is still Chad".
Say we were lucky, say the Fins suck, say whatever you want. This is the
first game for this new look Jet team and we looked pretty good. If not for
a bone headed play by Woody, this game is over without drama. I hope Woody
is running laps all the way back to NY.

And if it weren't for a couple of boneheaded plays by Dolphin DB's, then
they would have lost. Th jets aren't going to anything this year.
Chad didn't lose this game for the Fins, and he had them with a chance
to win at the very end.

Good to see you back here posting David Lee T. I agree wholeheartedly
with your comments above. Just like to add the excitement of
potentially having a decent CB opposite Revis... at least one that may
be a big upgrade over Justin Miller.

Well the throw wasn't great, but Ginn has to make sure that the DB
doesn't get the INT. If he's gonna get flagged for OPI anyway, he might
as well have tackled the DB, and at least there would have been one last
shot.

So the norm for Miami's DBs is smart, mistake-free play?
They have a secondary which makes mistakes, maybe that's why everyone
said it was the weakness of their defense.
Also, the Jets would have played the rest of the game differently had
they not hit on the 4th and 13 TD. You can't just take that out and
then analyze the game, it doesn't work that way.

Ginn had Revis wrapped up before the ball got there. Revis made a circus
catch to make that INT.
You don't think Revis was practicing that before the game do you?

Actually, I think on that play he did.
He pulled Revis down. Revis made a great 1-handed catch, while he was hitting the ground.

Watch it again... Revis just made a great play.
He had great position, then was pulled down, yet, still made the one-handed catch.

You're right about that. But it has been suggested by GG, that the
Jets were somehow dominating the game, which is what I didn't agree
with. They were never dominating. Games can hinge on a couple of
plays, and in this case they went in favor of the Jets.
