View Full Version : Post-game thoughts
JETSRULE06@yahoo.com 09-07-2008, 09:16 PM 1. Whew!
2. I *loved* the defense the Jets played after Miami's 1st TD.
Blitzing, aggressive, tight coverage on the outside, etc. However,
they went conservative on Miami's 4th-and-7. And if not for a
brilliant play by Revis, that change in strategy might have cost the
Jets the game.
3. Terrible game management by Mangini after the Jets went up 20-7.
The Jets are a team talented enough to deliver big blows, but they
kept absorbing them with their conservative playcalling. Running on
3rd and 7 on the final offensive drive was pathetic, a 1st down there
wins the game. Mangini thought Miami wouldn't have enough time to get
into position on their final possession. He was wrong, but got lucky
Revis saved him.
4. Yeah, yeah - Favre got lucky on the 4th down TD. But he made some
real nice throws and hung in there against quite a bit of pressure.
5. Jenkins was simply a beast. Taking on the double team, hustling all
over the place, pushing the pocket - he even chased down a RB for a
loss after a short pass. Very impressive.
6. Disappointed with Coles. I hope this was just rust because he never
looked into the game. Props to Stuckey with two big catches.
7. Pace and Lowery were awesome. Props to Thomas for matching his sack
total of a year ago.
8. Relatively quiet game for Rhodes, but he made a tremendous play on
that screen pass late in the game.
9. I have to admit - Thomas Jones looked MUCH better than Washington.
I do like how they were both utilized, however.
10. Whew!

In my opinion this is why we don't contend this year, unless things
change. I am so sick and tired of the bullshit conservative offensive
playcalling at the end of the game. The other team always knows that
the Jets are running and we never get the 1st down. Then we always put
it in the hands of the other team's QB to win or lose the game.
Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. That just isn't good enough.
We need a winning mentality, not a loser mentality from the coaching
staff.

Play to win, instead of not to lose. Sometimes I think Herm is still
the coach.
I agree 100%. If you leave the game in the hands of the opposing QB/our
defense enough times, we are losing more than winning.

I agree there. Mangini seemed to relent under intense criticism last
year, going for it on 4th down even when it was a senseless risk.
That's not the kind of aggressiveness you want. You want him to take
chances when a successful aggressive play wins the game, as a 3rd and
7 conversion would have.

I agree. Actually, the cowardice deserved a loss. We refused to play to
win. I wonder if my fellow Herm haters will call this for what it was.
Eric played not to lose and deserved to lose.

You can only be lucky if you get the ball off (which Garrard did not),
throw it at the right time, and throws it in a place where if someone
catches it good things will happen. All happened to Favre and not for
the first time. Luck tends to follow skill.

he needs to play on more key plays.

Agreed. Clowney is coming back too. I actually would like to trade Coles
while he still has value. Anyone know a team, not in our division who
needs a WR. Coles is affordable. We could use draft picks or a CB.

Thomas should just be cut. What a waste of talent. He is a one (maybe
two) trick poney. Lowery and Revis look to be our CBs for several years.
Now if we can only find a S to play opposite Rhodes.

Can't make plays if they throw the other way. Chad's passes, for the
most part, followed, the LB, Coleman, Barrett and Smith. He no dummey.

Agreed. Glad someone besides me saw that TJ finally looked like a RB.
Over 100 yards on only 22 carries. Sweet. Better than 4.5 ypc.

I am depressed with the win. We deserved so much more. We deserve a new
kicker. We deserve better play calling on both sides of the ball. We
deserve better use of personnel.

Yup. You both are right. Eric/SHott should and will be shot. No excuse
for playing not to lose.

Dude, just relax. Did you actually expect Farve to come out and throw
300 yards? Did you expect the Defense to Shut Down the Fins? There are
a lot of new pieces on this team, it's going to take several games for
them to know each other and start clicking. Heck even Special Team
didn't looked sharp today. I expect that to change with Westhoff back.
They'll get better every week, just get every W you can during the
period. Something is for sure, they need a kicker because Nugent
didn't looked good during the pre-season and today was just horrible.

Remember how Thomas got that contract nearly 2 years ago - by putting
up solid sack numbers as a result of all the Jets creative blitzing.
He isn't worth that contract, but might be able to give the Jets some
production if they keep up the style of play they utilized inbetween
Miami's 2 TDs.

I can understand disappointment with this win, but this year no team
needed a win on Week 1 more than the Jets. And they got it. Yes, it
should have been a much more impressive win from a statistical
standpoint. However, there were good signs - the passrush was good
(even Gholston got a pressure - imagine that!) and they did a solid
job against the run.

Agreed. To me, after a slow start, they held the fins to 49 yards rushing, and had a
decent pass rush... and the dbs look great, ummm, except Eric Smith.

Agreed. Don't know what happened to Mangini, after that 1st season.
He's become too conservative, in his *old* age ;)

Thomas is a feast or famine guy. He'll make a couple of nice plays, then whiff on a
tackle... then he's invisible.

Ah, that game was in the bag. How many games does Chad pull out at the end of a game?
I honestly wasn't worried. I figured it was the Football Gods, just doing their usual
stuff to scare SOJ fans ;)
