View Full Version : Do you feel better?
John C (tx) 09-03-2008, 04:02 AM OK, we picked up:
two linemen on offense, two TE's to go along with a solid one, a QB
that can throw and a FB.
On defense, a CB, two OLB (OK one looks like he will help immediately)
and Westhoff is back.
I promise not to scream politics for a few days but shouldn't this
season be fun?

It should be, but winning that first game is VERY important. You can
argue that no team faces more pressure in Week 1 than the Jets.
Favre's debut, playing against Pennington, Patriots and Chargers up
after that, etc.
John C (tx) 09-03-2008, 03:24 PM > And a real NT.
Based on pre-season I would have to say yes. I forgot all about him.
I am curious to see how DeRob plays if Coleman & Ellis play better
this year I guess I was wrong

Ask me Sunday night.
If we win big, I will be a believer and planning my winter differently.
If we lose, I will be alongside Johnny M and others calling for the end
of the Tangini reign.
h
BTW, the rational part of my mind expects a blow out win because we did
get a lot better where it counted.

I expect a close game.

See...now there ya go. You can't get that "factor" out of your system,
start watching Animal Planet, the Family Channel, lay off the Fox stuff and
you will be a much kinder gentler person....honest. I'll stay away from
Keith too.

LOL I hated him so much when he did sports that I have not even tried
to watch him comment on politics. I honestly really only watch
sports, HBO series and the History Channel. Oh, I forgot & Bugs Bunny.

I love HBO series...and some of the other cable outlets too....like
Showtime, the Tudors, and Dexter, what I miss I get into watching via On
Demand. I also watch a lot of Animal Planet, History Channel, and Discovery
in it's various forms. Keith ain't so bad......I love when he rants about
O'Rubbish....I absolutely can not stand that clown. OK....we disagree on
stuff. Go Jets.

Whenever I can find W.C. Fields that is a must watch....that guy was comedy.

The Wire was some of the best television ever done. It is a rare that
you can have that level of social commentary with interesting
characters.

Papa, the same writers are on Generation Kill. I am still not sure
about the show because with those guys writing you know they will kill
my favorite characters.

That's the one I'm into now...started last week with the On Demand episodes.
It is a very upsetting show at times, I feel very badly for some of those
characters. I haven't coached since '90, but some of the guys that were
seniors that year were guys who went military. One was a kid I talked into
coming out for football and he did exceptionally well as a D end. I saw him
recently, he has been home for a year and a half after three tours, 1 in
Afghanistan and 2 in Iraq.....this kid was, is a super tough person, but his
experiences have taken a huge toll. The high school he went to and where I
coached him took him on as an assistant coach. I spent quite a bit of time
with him one evening just after I reconnected with him. He has some serious
issues, physically for the most part, but psychologically too. I suspect
there will be a lot like him. But.....that appears to be as equally well
written. All of that stuff makes you wonder why the rest of TV has to be so
bad. Would we put up with a sport done that poorly? I hope not, thank
heavens for these series...when I have bad insomnia I get a lot of relief
from them. The drugs I have to take can cause bouts of serious sleep
problems, then On Demand becomes a very good friend.

I am sorry about the kid. It is one reason I favor the draft. If
everyone had skin in the game we might think long & hard before this
stuff started.
As for HBO programming, & not replicating it more often, I don't get
it. Maybe the fear of the slow story line but someone in here who
knows TV might answer that better.

Well....I think Burf would say that it is another measure of how dumb some
people believe the American public is. A lot of people just didn't watch
The Wire because they couldn't follow it, you had to pay attention to that
and think....Americans don't like to think. I believe, like Burf, that we
are seeing this in the election too. There are obvious stragegies to avoid
substance and issues and run on personality, this should be an election on
issues. I read some European publications, and no way am I saying I want to
go live there, but the discussion on positions and policies is a big deal
there. Same thing with drama....I really think that we are dealing with the
Sesame Street folks grown up....the new TV is the same format, which is a
commercial ad format, and gives you a few minutes of pablum followed by a
break, you can make you own decisions about what is going on and it is over.
One thing that drives me nuts about Discovery, History Channel and all of
those is the way they repeat the same freakin thing over and over everytime
they come back to the story line...it's like reading a bed time story to a
little kid and refreshing it every night before going forward. So, people
who want a little more substance and want to have to think....watch The
Wire, Generation Kill, and those type shows. Did you ever watch The Tudors?
John C (tx) 09-05-2008, 07:39 PM > So, people

I did I liked it but too much sex. I think they do a fair job on the
history especially showing Henry's angst relative to the break with
the church and the fact at how that was driven by the need for finance
as well as the obvious issues.
Rome was fun as well.

Rome was great, loved it. I was struck by how similar some events seemed to
be to contemporary issues...I was a history major as an undergrad. I accept
that drama can not be history...it just doesn't work, but that doesn't stop
me from appreciating what they do in terms of relevancy to keep the interest
in the piece. Some things though make me laugh...the movie Gladiator had
various people living in totally different time periods together...that bugs
me. As for the sex....I truly believe that sex played a much more powerful
role in the past and was less forbidden than what we claim today. Studying
some anthropology will give you that information. Then, what else was there
to do? :-)
John C (tx) 09-06-2008, 07:49 PM > As for the sex....I truly believe that sex played a much more powerful

I like fiction that has enough accuracy to make someone read a book &
learn more. Patrick O' Brian's novels are a great example, especially
if you like that era. It spawned companion books just so even someone
strong in that era can understand.
No arguments with you on the sex. Look at the Irish. Brehon Laws &
divorce. The Irish church was one of teh last hold outs requiring
celibacy of its priests.
Nudity isn't a problem from a prudish side. It just limits the
audience.

I have a good friend who is an author, novelist...he calls it the "wheel of
fiction and truth" and says you can write a story that is one degree away
from the truth...but in telling that story, you have to jump the 359 degrees
alll the way around the wheel to tell it...if you try and bridge that one
degree gap...you ruin the story....I agree with him, and I agree with you, I
like movies that make me look up historical facts.

I'm even thinking American history....lots of juicy stuff going on.

Not in most European countries, and some South American ones too....we have
a real split personality issue on that here. The stuff that gets marketed
directly to kids is far more over the top than nudity that is part of a
dramatic situation and part of the story. MTV and all the rest are extreme
in many ways....we need to grow up, and we need to stop exploiting things
the way we do. OMHO
John C (tx) 09-07-2008, 10:48 PM > ....we need to grow up, and we need to stop exploiting things

OK, but as a father I don't need Henry VIII asking Ann Boleyn's sister
for head in front of my 13 year old.
Shakespeare in Love didn't need nudity but it chose to have it. So a
great movie that could be tool in the classroom now becomes a problem.
I realize that what is on the net is far worse than TV but why use the
R rated card if it isn't needed?

I'm sure you are aware of how far to the side of "decency" some issues have
gone. A local art teacher recently took her class to NYC to go to the
Metropolitan Museum of Art.....the fact that there were nude paintings there
and nude sculptures, and she let her junior high (7th and 8th grade) kids
see them almost cost her a job. There was a huge parents uproar created
from a relatively small number of people...but, they spread the word about
"obscenity" and got people on the band wagon until they realized what the
truth was. Now, I would NEVER let my child see The Tudors....but the nudity
in some other movies is quite different and is no more explicit than what
may appear in some TV ads in Europe or South America. I worked at a
Catholic school one time...they had no problem with the nude scene in the
Romeo and Juliet movie version....they had enough intelligence to realize if
you dealt with it appropriately in teaching and explanation with the kids it
was not a bad thing. One of the school districts around here has an
outright ban on kids hugging....a first grader can be reprimanded for
hugging a friend....this is what has come of our culture....hugging is
considered inappropriate touching, a kiss can get you suspended.....but, the
punishment for fighting is slightly less or the same. The way sex was
presented in The Tudors...NO, it was for adults and they clearly stated
that. I have no problem being an adult and also being a parent, kids should
not see some things that are appropriate for adults. That said, nudity that
is purely incidental is a natural fact of life...if it appears in some
dramatic presentations I see nothing wrong with it. I do see something
wrong with adults who want the rest of the world to fall in lock step with
their thinking and also do their job of parenting. I have locks on the TV
that I can use when my grandkids are here....I won't even let them watch
some of the music video channels...but I'm not going to boycott the channels
or complain about them. It's just a difference in opinion.....in The
Tudors, I personally think it revealed how the royalty and people fighting
for power were. What else did they have to bargain with? Sex was
used...the Boelyn story is true as were countless others throughout history.
Cleopatra wrote a book on beauty, she seduced Ceasar and Mark Antony....she
had to have something going for her....sex has been a commodity for a very
long, long time. Now...the internet....I'm old....that is WAY out of
bounds, when it begins to violate all cultural constraints, we have
problems. I am very concerned about the predators on the internet and the
proliferation of the exploitation of children.
John C (tx) 09-08-2008, 01:25 PM I agree 100% and I know I am getting old when I am writing about
abusing nudity & couching it in art. Sometimes it is & sometimes they
just want to avoid a PG rating.
