View Full Version : Inge not the answer
Brian 08-30-2008, 01:42 AM Inge is a nice guy and tries hard but how can anyone say he is a legitimate
full time catcher? A move needs to be made before next season!

He may be the nicest guy in the world, but whats that have to
do with catching? Some even think he'll make an average catcher
after the "Inge Experiment", but whats that have to do with
winning a world series? Look at Tiger history. It will teach you.

In the years the Tigers won or went to the World Series, they always
had good catchers. In 1968, it was Bill Freehan who had a BA of 263
(same as Norm Cash's); he had 25 HR and 84 RBI, 65 walks and 64 KOs.
More importantly he knew how to run the pitching staff and was an
excellent defensive catcher.
In 1984 Lance Parrish was the catcher. His BA was 237 but he had 33
HR and 98 RBIs. He too knew how to run the pitching staff and was an
excellent defensive catcher.
In 2006 we had future HOFer Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. That year he had
a 300 BA, 69 RBI and 13 HR. He was a stablizing force behind the
plate for a young pitching staff and was still a very good defensive
catcher having only 25 bases stolen on him while he threw out 26
others.
Inge is nowhere near either of those 3 guys in offensive or defensive
production. And I'm not sure he'd ever be as good as them at catcher.

This is what happens when a ""baseball fan"" only knows one team.
Pat Borders was once a World Series MVP.

I know you Mr Binge and your NO Mr Borders, no matter
what any know it all says. You are ONLY a liability
who has been given way too many chances and who will
eventually be given a bus ticket before you can help
again prevent my team from winning a WS.

I don't know if you actually seen Parrish
or Freehan play during those Championship
years but if so you can't help but laugh,
shake your head and feel sorry for these
Inge apologists and know it alls. Some buy
their wifes zircon too, so it's not surprising.

you know, when it is said that a team has to be strong up the middle, it
refers to defense. Many teams have won championships with mediocre hitting
catchers, and even weak hitting shortstops. Of course, it would not surprise
me at all to find out that you never heard of Ray Oyler.

Well I believe we're just about finished here. Your never going
to convince me that the current Tiger catching and middle infield
will ever bring a championship to Detroit. It's plain and simple
that either singly or collectively they don't have the strengths
and intangibles necessary to get the job done. Now get your head
back under the sand and pick another player to be an apologist for.
Ray Oyler's Team never heard of Chuck Hernandez either and they
were smart enough not to carry around a handfull of zircons and
fools gold.

Yeah, I saw them both in person in Tiger Stadium on several occasions
making the trip from Indiana to see a game. Inge is a great athlete
and he learned to play 3rd very well. But he's not and probably never
will be much better than a #8 or #9 hitter. If Guillen can't come
back or has a very limited role on the team, then they need to keep
Inge as the everyday 3rd baseman. But to keep him on as the everyday
catcher would be a mistake, IMO.

Depends on how he plays the position defensively. Either way, however,
they'll need to make up some offense at the position he's not playing.
