View Full Version : How 'bout those Reds?
Kevin McClave 08-28-2008, 03:07 PM Wow.
This group is always somewhat sparsely populated (I've always wished
there were more participants...of the other Usenet groups I frequent,
the NY Giants group has always had more activity...and the Springsteen
group rec.music.artists.springsteen is historically among the most
active in Usenet), but I honestly don't ever remember it being *this*
quiet during a season...any season, even the other bad ones.
I'm not really complaining as much as making an observation.

talk about a bad team?My solution, trade for Roy Oswalt, that would
save them at least 5-6 losses per year. Otherwise he'll be able to
beat the Reds when he is in a wheelchair.

Given the revolving door that the front office and manager's job has
been.....I can root for Jay Bruce and Joey Votto. I can root for the
pitchers. Dumping Dunn has really taken the wind out of my sails as a fan.
Either they don't think Adam Dunn is a good baseball player, or they
have decided they can't pay a good baseball player. That means the only
hope the team has of becoming competitive is to draft and develop
talent. ....They have a GM known for being unable to build a farm system
and a manager whose known for preferring veterans.
I watched during the Boone years, I'll pay attention now, but I don't
hold out a lot of hope.

That pretty much sums up my feelings -- except I hardly can stand to pay
attention to the team at this time.

Part of the slow trafiic is due to a change in your posting frequency.
I remember a few years ago you could be counted to start tons of
topics each season; most of them more than passing drivel too.

I dont think i've been this optimistic about the Reds pitching staff
in over a decade. I'm serious. They've got 4 starters, a closer, and a
righty/lefty setup combo that could realistically put up solid numbers
in 2009.
Volquez has emerged as the new ace of the staff; he's been able to be
more than effective for 5 months now. Harang has probably had phsical
problem all season. A winters rest and recuperation could be enought
to return him to 200+ innings of ~4.00 era. I think Arroryo has
figured out his problems. His ERA has been very high this year, but a
lot of that stems from his April disarray and that game where he gave
up 10 runs in less than an inning. I'd be interested in seeing how
many quality starts each starter has. I'm excited about Cueto as the
4th starter. Frankly he sucked more often than not this season but
thats to be expected at this stage in his career. i think he's a good
bet to turn into another Volquez next year.
Bray is beginning to provide some return from the Kearns/Lopez-for-
nothing debacle of a couple years ago. Hopefully, Burton can recover
from his injury. Cordero should be adequate as closer.
The 5th rotation spot has been a total black hole this season. The
winning percentage in games started by someone other than our 1-4 guys
has to be well under .250. Just an absolute disaster. It cant possibly
be that bad next year. We've got a few decent young candidates and I
expect Walt to make a 5th starter a priority.
Now, about that offense....

Huh. Well, thanks.
I guess they've just beaten the life out of me baseball-wise.

I moved to Cincinnati in 1995.
This will be the first year I didn't go to a single game.
Sad, ain't it?

I've been to six games this year: two Cardinals games because my pal
is a Cards fan, two Braves games because I follow Atlanta, one Mets
game because my brother-in-law is from Queens, and one Brewers game
because work paid for it (and gave us $20 worth of free vouchers,
which almost gets you two hot dogs and two beers.)
I've seen some good stuff this year (two Volquez starts, Bruce's first
homer, Griffey's 599th) but when I realized I'm going to the games
despite the Reds rather than because of them... that's a bummer. The
Cardinals series was after the Dunn trade, and the stadium was just
dead. Great weather, weekend game, division rival, lots of out-of-
towners and still less than half full.

I saw the Dunn grand slam off Madduz and a couple of Volquez starts. One
of Junior's early home runs. ....I'm far enough away and busy enough
with other stuff, that I really have to make an effort to get down
there. It's tough to make that effort. I believe I've been to 4 games.

Giving Dunn away for trash has been my worst fear for a while, because
it meant that the front office didn't get it, and it's pretty much
sucked the reds fever out of me. My last great hope for the moment
was that WJ knew a little bit more about building a team and old
fashioned horse trading than his predecessors, but, judging from the
Griffey and Dunn trades, and the release of Ross, and the fact that
Weathers and Affeldt weren't moved, it looks like he's just sitting
around going thru the motions. I'd like to think he's at least
trying but I have my doubts.
That makes it pretty much a grand sweep for me. Sans Dunn, the team
is not particularly memorable or even likable with Phillips being
pushed as the star. I think the manager was the worst possible
choice for the type of team we had, and I can't really stand to listen
to mini-Marty or the "cowboy" on the radio.
I've said it before, this team has turned into the baseball version of
the bengals, which I stopped following quite a while ago.
On the general baseball side, I try to bring up stuff to talk about
from time to time, and try to participate when others do, but I think
there are so few of us that it's an almost impossible task.

pretty damn terrible and if this is him not trying I'm not really
comfortable either.

In retrospect, I wish they had kept Pete, simply for the stability of it.
Cycling through managers and GM's on a yearly basis is not good for the
organization. You have to start pointing the finger at Bob sooner or later.
He's got his guys in there now, I really wonder how long they'll last. The
vitrol from the broadcasting both hasn't slowed down now that Dunn is gone.
They've just changed whipping boys. I don't mind the cowboy when he's alone
in the both because he gets so occupied in the play by play that he usually
doesn't have time to say too many stupid things, but pair him with anybody
and he's unlistenable.

I simply don't remember a time in the last 40 years when I felt as badly
about the organization's future prospects as I do right now. It's very clear
that they have some talent on the roster, but lord is it painful to watch.

So you got the sense of it too?
From what I read, the white sox called him up asking about KGJ, and
he was apparantly caught off guard. That's unbelievable.
Same with Dunn. We got crap for our best offensive player, almost
like he didn't expect anyone to want him and was happy for someone to
just take him off his hands. And now all of the idiot media talks
about how bad the offense is.
And Ross, I heard mentioned with the Fish, Red Sox, and Phils. If
you have one with interest, you can do a trade, but 3 should mean a
little better trade. Instead, we got bupkus. I didn't like Ross
much, but if we got nothing for him, then he should still be here.

I haven't been listening, but let me guess.... Edwin is now the root
of all our problems? Or has the luster worn off of Bruce, since he
isn't the immediate saviour?
I don't like listening to the cowboy criticize over the top, but he is
the worst PBP announcer I've ever heard. After two years, he still
cannot do the most fundamental requirement, which is to call the play.
I cannot follow at all because he doesn't say what's going on, or he
does it wrong. A "shot down the line past Edwin" was actually a
seeing eye single between short and 3rd, or a "pop up to left" somehow
lands 10 rows back in the seats. He's horrible.

This week I read somewhere that Dusty was asked why risk pitching
Cueto any more this year, and the idiot said, "We might be in a
pennant race next year and need him to pitch for us. He needs that
September baseball experience for our future."
I can't even argue with something like that. He's one of the dumbest
baseball "guys" I've ever heard, and our owner insisted on giving him
$11 million dollars. What a friggin' world.
College football is here, and I'm excited to see if my mountaineers
can continue to be among the elite. And the bearcats seem to be a
pretty quality team as well, even without Mauk, so let the tailgating
begin.

Yeah. The official line was that they wanted to give the club climb back
into contention, meaning get near 500.
I have to wonder if they had actually shopped those guys in mid july what
they might have actually recieved in return.
It was an odd decision....odd in the sense of "terrible"
