View Full Version : Mariano gains on Trevor
Hoover 08-28-2008, 06:52 AM Greetings, Stats Fans:
I have not updated the Trevor vs. Mariano "Chase for the
All Time Saves Record" story since back on May 15th
On that day Mariano had 11 saves on the year vs. just 7 for
Trevor. As of today, their 2008 totals are:
======================================
Saves blown ERA
=====================================
Mariano 31 1 1.53
Trevor 27 3 4.12
Back on May 15th, Rivera's ERA was 0.53 and Trevor was
at a dreadful 5.34. After his rough beginning, Hoffman has
converted 20 of his last 21 save chances. Mariano had 67
Ks in 58 IP, while Trevor totals 44 in 39 IPs.
Both these Gentlemen presumably are already assured their
rightful places in Cooperstown ....... but this question lingers:
when they retire, WHICH man will have the All-Times saves
record in his pocket?
Let's go to the Kirby Closer Tote Board as of Aug. 28, 2008:
================================================
CAREER SAVES
August 28, 2008
===============================================
Trevor Hoffman 551 + 77
Mariano Rivera 474
THEIR AGES
The age differential is just over 2 years..... Trevor born Oct. 1967
and Rivera in Nov. 1969. That makes Trevor 40 and Rivera 38.
This factor remains Mr. Rivera's best chance of catching Hoffman
before Mariano retires.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
The purpose of this exercise is purely to look at the All Times Saves
Record. It's not an attempt to knock either player. Both are great.
Trevor's inexplicable feat, bouncing back from career-threatening
surgery to post FOUR straight 40+ saves seasons (2004-2007)
will likely keep the Saves Record in his possession for a decade
or more after his retirement.

The fact that Mariano gets more save opportunities, even in what their fans
consider an off year, means Trevor needs to bump his lead up into the low
80s in order to have a good chance of holding off Rivera. JMO, YMMV.

He's only had two more opportunities this year, in what's been an off
year for the Pads as well. Even though the Yankees win more games
than the Padres every year, it generally doesn't translate into a big
advantage in save opportunities, because the Padre wins tend to be
closer games than the Yankee wins.
