Well, we swept the Diamondbacks. Dodgers, if ya wanna gain any ground,
now would be a good time to do it.

That was an epic comeback. :o)

Has anyone heard the reason why Hairston was removed from the lineup when
the Padres took the field on defense after the 3-run rally in the 7th?

Since he was scheduled to lead off the next inning, it made no sense
whatsoever to pull him and put the pitcher in that spot, shifting Edgar
Gonzalez to RF with Gerut moving over to CF.

Sure, it paid off when leadoff pinch-hitter Giles singled to start the
winning rally, but that was a bizarre sequence of events.

Was he injured when he dived for a ball in the outfield a couple of innings
earlier and it had started to bother him?
Did he say something snarky about Black's wife in the dugout?
Since I stayed at the ballpark to watch the Storm-66'ers minor league half
of the double header, I didn't catch the post-game radio show where they
might have discussed this.
(BTW, our A-league kiddie corps thrashed the wannabe-Dodgers 10-5, with
several players, including slugging OF Kellen Kulbacki and 1st round draft
pick Allan Dykstra having big games. Pitcher Cesar Carillo also looked
good... I could see him holding down the #3 or #4 slot in the rotation in a
couple years)

I hope to SHOUT we did our part !

How about spotting Randy Johnson a 4-0 lead into the 7th inning,
and coming back to win 5-4. That was big time, and a credit to
SD manager Bud Black. His team has not quit.

John Kentera on am-1090 today said Hairston's thumb was injured and he
might be gone for the season. Kentera didnt add details about how the
injury occurred. Details are not his strong suit.

The leadoff hitter was an outfielder named Luis Durango, who looks like he
can run (5'10", whippet-like build) but never attempted a stolen base
despite being on base 4 times (3 for 4 and a walk). He did show some speed
in the outfield and going 1st-3rd and rounding 3rd to score.
His numbers for the season so far are impressive: .439/.515/.474 with Lake
Elsinore (he was .305/.395/.365 with Ft. Wayne before his promotion)

That this kid wasn't running wild lends credence to the perception that the
stolen base isn't a primary part of the organizational philosophy. In his 67
PA's with the Storm, he's reached base 35 times, and stolen 1 base and was
caught once. In 383 PA's with Ft. Wayne, he was on base 151 times, and was
14-7 in the SB department.

There are only a few guys with double-digit steal totals at Lake Elsinore:
OF Javis Diaz is 28-7, but his offensive numbers are only .253/.315/.332.
2B Eric Sogard is 16-6, with a .310/.399/.461 line in 595 PA's
In a bit of a surprise, C (!) Mitch Canham is 13-1 with ..280/.378/.424 so
it will be interesting to watch his progress through the organization.
CF Cedric Hunter has 12-6 with a ..323/.367/.449 batting line ... I suspect
they'll want to see a better OBP "bump" over his BA than his current .044,
but I see potential here.
3B Reyner Contreras (didn't play Wednesday) is 10-5 with a ..309/.396/.402
line

Also, the guy who did play 3B on Wednesday, Brian Joynt, has some good
hitting numbers (.301/.373/.539), but showed a bit of wildness throwing to
1B, one throwing error on a bunt set up runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs
in the first inning that Carillo pitched his way out of nicely without
giving up a run. I suspect he may wind up being moved to 1B eventually, and
having a power-hitting RH 1B in the organization to possibly work in behind
Gonzo for when he needs a day off (and who can also play 3B... albeit with a
scattershot arm) is probably a good thing. Most of the 1B's in the
organization seem to be lefty hitters. Not a running threat though.
