View Full Version : Last 100 Loss Season
Hoover 08-21-2008, 05:10 AM I was torn between 1974 and 1993 as the last Padres 100 loss year,
but when I took Casey Stengel's advice to , "look it up" the correct
answer proved to be ......in 1993 ........ ( 61 wins - 101 losses) .
It was also close in 2002 and 2003, when the Friars lost 96 and 98
games respectively.
So let's compare the Padres position today to that of the 1993,
2002 and 2003 teams. At this writing the 2008 Padres have played
a total of 125 games:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Record through 125 games
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
W L
-------------------
1993 Padres 48 77
2008 Padres 48 77
2003 Padres 47 78
2002 Padres 53 72
The 2003 team was a game worse at this point than the 2008 club,
but improved the final 6 weeks, going 17 and 20 down the stretch
to avoid the 100-loss Club.
The 2008 Friars need to win just 15 of their remaining 37 contests
to avert the Triple Digit curse.
So that's what is left of the 2008 season ! Try not to be as Bad as
the notorious, "Fire Sale" edition of Ninety-Three. :(

Ugh!
That's a hell of a benchmark to be pointing towards, but sadly, that's the
reality of this year's team.
Personally, I don't believe the talent level is as bad as the record... and
that they should be able to avoid the stigma of a 100 loss season.

The other bad news is we always seem to screw up the high draft pick that is
the only silver lining for a bad record.
Go Pads !

The Matt Bush pick was indefensible.
Most of their other 1st round "screwups" have come because of injuries to
pitchers who were indeed first round talents. Whether that is a reflection
on the medical portion of their scouting program, the training regimen for
minor league pitchers, or merely a run of piss-poor bad luck is a legitimate
topic for debate.
That they have an excellent shot at SDSU's Stephen Strasburg (a "hometown"
pick I think all would heartily endorse, unlike with Bush) bodes well for
the future strength of the pitching staff... unless he blows out an elbow
(knock wood!).

That's how I've felt most of the season, but, because of trades and
injuries, the current roster looks to me like a 100-loss team. The
rotation is now Peavy and four nobodies, and there's nothing on the
active roster resembling a major league catcher or shortstop. We came
into the season with the outfield looking like the weakest part of the
team; now it looks like the strongest.

In my view, a high first round pick should never be used on a high school
player no matter who it is.

I think history says that high school pitchers generally aren't worth
the risk, but there have been some can't-miss high school position
players - unfortunately, Matt Bush wasn't one of them. The Mariners
did OK with a couple of high school players they took with the number
one overall pick - Griffey and ARod.

I believe a big part of the Alderson drafting philosophy is to draft college
pitchers, and if a HS player is taken, it's a position player. The risk with
pitchers especially is excessively high.
