View Full Version : 2008 Lions record predictions
Meano.Culpa@yahoo.com 08-18-2008, 04:28 PM Reply before kickoff against the Falcons on September 7th.
It has been argued that groups are better than individuals at
predicting things like this (through "aggregation of individual
probability estimates"). Last year, the group's median prediction was
7-9 (with 6.7 wins & 9.3 losses as the mean). Five a.s.f.p.d-l
predictions were dead on and my prediction was the furthest off. In my
defense, I had my crystal ball tuned to the second half of the season.

After last year's *splendid* 7-9, the rolling averages show the Lions on an
uptick. My FOREX software says the Lions will finish 9-7 and lose their WC
playoff game.

as I gaze my crystal ball, I see them coming in at 6-10, and that is
if they win a couple of division games, splitting with Chi and Minn.
if not, then it will probably be 4-12, if that.
but i'll stick with my 6-10

You know, I was thinking something very similar to this.
Most teams have a hard time cutting their roster down, having to get
rid of some quality players and making tough decisions on who to get
rid of. The Lions seem to be the opposite. They have a tough time
deciding on who they have to keep. : )
I'll wait until preseason is over before I make my yearly 10-6
prediction.....
Sir Creep 08-20-2008, 05:03 PM NOTE: Sir Creep is no longer a denizen of the D! I up and moved to
Acadiana (Lafayette, LA) a week ago, and now am a devoted Saints fan
(at least I can root for a team that MIGHT win a playoff game, though
they too know nothing of SBs).
You fucking Detroit Lions can't break my little heart anymore...I
won't let you. 45 years is enough. Like I said, I used to work a
couple blocks form Ford Field [for the Sheriff's Dept--secret out]!
But now I is in da bayou. So peace to all y'all left in the mitten,
and the last one out of Michigan turn out the lights. Now for the
prediction...
--------------------------------------------------
Sep 7 @Atlanta 1:00pm I can't imagine it, but they DO seem to
always beat the Falcons. WIN
Sep 14 Green Bay 1:00pm This shows the more things change, the
more they stay the same. LOSS
Sep 21 @San Francisco 4:05pm Losing to JT O'Sullivan/Martz? Oh,
you betcha. LOSS
Week 4 BYE [what a terrible time for a 1-2 team to have a bye, you
gotta admit. A couple weeks later, at least. Jeesh!]
Oct 5 Chicago 1:00pm They BETTER win this one. WIN
Oct 12 @Minnesota 1:00pm The 'not ready for prime time
players'. LOSS
Oct 19 @Houston 4:05pm Typical Lions, when you know they'll lose,
they.... WIN
Oct 26 Washington 12:00pm Not a chance in hell. LOSS
Nov 2 @Chicago 1:00pm They BETTER sweep this team. At 4-5, still
in the thick of things (but close 2-5)... WIN
Nov 9 Jacksonville 1:00pm Not a FUCKING chance. LOSS
Nov 16 @Carolina 1:00pm Ditto. LOSS
Nov 23 Tampa Bay 1:00pm An interesting game, I dare say. First
of 3 at home. Garcia gets em though. LOSS
Nov 27 Tennessee 12:30pm VYoung = Harrington (just not drafted
3rd overall), might be benched by this game. WIN
Dec 7 Minnesota 1:00pm The game could decide 2nd place in
division... WIN. And now to close out the season...
Dec 14 @Indianapolis 1:00pm LMAO. LOSS (should count as two.
Hopefully not 35-0 at half again)
Dec 21 New Orleans 1:00pm SC's new hometown team! SC can now root
against the Lions without flinching. LOSS
Dec 28 @Green Bay 1:00pm An annual fate predetermined by the footall
Gods. LOSS
------------------------------------------
I honestly don't believe they'll win 6 games, but dammit, I went game
by game and that's what I came up with. 6-10.
Sir Creep of da Bayou, for true!
Mort Fromage 08-21-2008, 09:56 AM How about 6-8, third in the division, ahead of Chicago. The Lions have
always alternated improving years with retreating years. I still don't have
a real good feeling for the defense.

Pssst! Mort! The NFL went to a 16 game schedule 30 (1978) years ago,
not 14!

Ok. 6-10. It's official.

Oh that's (almost) easy. The Packers should go 6-2 in the division,
and that's enough. Boy, I don't buy this Minnesota defense thing the
media is shoving up my ass....I mean they are good, but please, not
Jacksonville good or anything (or Pitt, SD, NEng, etc etc). In fact
thier not Green Bay good, imho.
So:
Green Bay 10-6
Minn 7-9
Detroit 6-10
Chicago 3-13
Let me know (as you certainly will) at season's end.
Oh, and you know how (for isntance) you buy Little Caesers to support
the Red Wings, or whatever. Yesterday I CONSCIOUSLY went to Lowe's
instead of Home Depot (I HATE Lowes, there's never any frickin help)
and will continue to do so....because Arthur Blank owns HDepot and the
Falcons, and as I'm now in Saints territory, and will proudly wear my
black/gold fluer do lis, I will NOT give money to the Falcons when I
can give it to my Saints. Please help by doing the same. Or go to
ACO Hardware, a fine local Michigan outfit at least....support your
own, but not Blank/Falcons.

And yours are so MUCH more accurate. Just because you state an opinion
from game to game doesn't make your opinion correct. What was your
prediction last year? 4-12? Well, you were wrong. In a prediction
contest, any and all predictions are just opinions. The Lions finished
last year at 7-9. I predicted 9-7 so I was 2 games off. Meanwhile,
your prediction of 4 wins was 5 games off. So who was closer?
And I thought you were done here? Since you're a Saints fan now, go
bother their group, if there IS one. And I must say, I really feel
sorry for the Saint fans for having to put up with your nonsense.
While you're at it, could you take Tommy with you? : )

All joking aside, the Lions have actually looked pretty good this
preseason. I know it's only preseason, but installing a new offense
usually takes time. Their defense looks pretty good too, with an
entire new backfield. Their special teams needs some work and may get
burned a few times early in the season, but I really think this may
finally be the season the Lions make the playoffs!

Particularly that last sentence? I went to the game with a good
friend from Hamtramck, and I purchased the tix that very day off CL.
What am I missing?
Anyway, any person born/reared in Detroit can't possibly 'troll' the
Detroit sports teams sites, presuming they root for said teams. You
better look up the definition, and the one for 'twit' whilst you at

Weak running game, weak OL, same late season fade by Kitna (I'm tired of
reading how "tough" he is, he's weak when it counts), a bit more
consistency on defense, usual story with injuries.

This is why I waited for my prediction. Late signings and late
injuries. If everyone stays healthy, I could see the Lions going 10-6
this year. Maybe even 11 wins if they get ALL the bounces. But nothing
ever seems to go the Lions way, so I could also see them going 6-10
and maybe even 5-11. But, I'll go out on a limb and say.......
10-6. They'll make the playoffs and lose in the opening round.

After starting the season 6-2 last year, it would take a lot to be as
"out of control" as last year. If the Lions string together a winning
streak to start the season, watch out for the trolls and posts
starting flame wars. It's the same every year, we'll see some Chicago,

And everything I've said is right on, brother Dave.
BTW, you can see all my footage of it from my balcony on youtube....if
you can put a simple search syntax together.
I'm waiting to hear why Millen needs to stay after this past week.
Should be a long conversation there, eh?

you REALLY are. LMAO

No. You know that isn't true, as usual.
Show me the post where I called anyone out for predicting a week 1
win.
You never cease to amaze your revisionist history in your posts,
particularly my posting history.
But here's your umpteenth opportunity....find it, cut it, paste it.
I'm not even sure whatyou're referring to....but if it was you being
childishly giddy over a 4-0 preseason and equating that to regular
season success, then I believe THAT is what I called you and anyone
like you out on.

Are you a heavy drinker? Do you have black outs?
Here is what I'm saying;
You called the game in Atlanta a win for the Lions and here is your
post after they lost;
