Last week ... he made a lazy catch in the end zone and failed to get
his feet down ... Tonight ... he made 2 great plays getting his feet
down ... looked like Toomer out there ...

And this Danny Ware guy...wow! I see Droughns being the odd man out
here. Tough break (no pun intended) for that guy who broke his ankle.
He was a nice human interest story. Looks like his dreams are gone
now.

I had him making it prior to last night's game on ST's alone. I've
gotta say though he looks really impressive. Top 5 receivers?
Burress
Toomer
Smith
Manningham
Hixon
Moss?
Tyree? (PUP)
Thorpe?
Jennings? (Drops a few last night. Practice squad make him a CB?)
London? (Injured)
Hall?

I'm having my doubts about Manningham. Is he going to be this year's
Moss? Injury prone??

I liked him in college. A lot more than Moss, who I never liked but he's
not quite as polished a receiver as Smith was coming out of college.

To be honest, I don't know his history Lois. Missing this much time
has definitely set him back from making any immediate contribution. I
suspect injuries will dictate who plays at WR this season, so it
bothers me not, to be well stocked at that position.

As long as they are not "Thomas Lewis"... he's got to be the worst 1st
round pick WR in the history of the game....

Thank you SOO much for reminding us of him. I had almost forgotten
about the historic Dave Brown/Thomas Lewis offense.

Yeeesh! I recall Lewis running back a KO. Hershel Walker ran past
him and made a block. The jist of it was that Lewis was going full
out.

Definitely the highlight of George Young's GM career.

Wide receivers are always a crapshoot. The Giants rolled snake-eyes with
him.

A quarterback who can't throw and a wide receiver who can't catch. Whom
do you blame more for failure?

WR. Brown was just an average loser, Lewis turned him into a great
loser.
lubow 08-23-2008, 04:46 AM I have a feeling Wellington had something to do with it like with all the other
lousy first round draft picks from my youth. Those standouts included Bob
Gaiters, Joe Don Looney and Rocky Thompson.

I know I sound like a broken record, but the Looney pick really made
some sense. The Giants were drafting late and no one then or now
doubted Looney's talent. He could have been a great one. However, back
then no one really could grasp what a head case he was (except Bud
Wilkerson.)

You weren't alone, Tom. At least four other teams tried to straighten
him out after his insane behavior with the Giants. Don Shula said
Looney was just too gifted to pass up. But in the end, he was always
too crazy to keep.

Looney and Gaiters were before my time but I remember Thompson well. He was
a speedster running back who couldn't catch the ball and the Giants drafted
him with the intent of making him a wide receiver since Ron Johnson just
recorded the team's first 1000 yard season rushing. Wellington was running
things then and he was truly fucking clueless. My dad was steaming about
tht pick.
lubow 08-24-2008, 12:40 AM Actually, Wellington went on record stating that Thompson was drafted to enhance
the special teams!
Anyone here from the Boston area and is old enough to remember the WEEI (AM
radio) Sports Huddle with Eddie Andelman, Jim McCarthy and Mark ("Mahk") Witkin?
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,903774,00.html?promoid=googlep
I was in grad school in Boston when the guys on the Sports Huddle were laughing
up a storm at the Thompson pick (they were Pats fans, of course). They even
went as far as to call the hotel in Honolulu where the NFL was conducting winter
meetings to "congratulate" Wellington on his "excellent" draft pick.
The deadpan they played on Wellington was absolutely hilarious. Andleman even
went as far as deliberately mispronouncing Wellington's name. Now, you have to
remember that CBS broadcasted all 14 Giant games to Boston since the early 1950s
so naturally Wellington thought these guys were Giants fans.
"Well, Mr. 'Myra' we want to congratulate you on shoring-up the Giants punt and
kick off returning and we know Rocky Thompson will be as successful as all your
other great first round picks."
Wellington in his usually gracious self thanked the Sports Huddle for their good
wishes. And I was laughing hysterically to the point I couldn't get my homework
done. It was tough to be a fan and to be a grad student in Boston in the early
1970s.

See, this is how bad karma stores up. 43 years later, those Pats-fans
got stricken with 18-1. <g>
