Upton has enough base running problems without the umps making
horrific calls. The call tonight that after he hustled out an infield
hit he turned towards second and was tagged out was rediculous. I hate
baseball umps. They are full of themselves. Until they allow replays
of their calls in the stadium I will never respect them. NFL refs are
scrutinized in great detail and they live with their decisions whether
they are right or wrong. Baseball umps are not held accountable for
their mistakes and they should be. No wonder managers spit in their
faces. I would do worse.

Yes, that was a screwed call, but it's a game. Are you saying you
would do physical harm to an umpire for a blown call? Seriously
dude...

I believe Umps are held accountable somewhat because every called
ball, strike and recorded out is reviewed by the umpires union and the team
that was on hand at the game(s).
I agree that umps make mistakes and an mistake should not determine the
outcome of the game, in all my years of watching baseball (37 to be exact)
I have only seen one overturned call by a home plate umpire, I can't
remember the circumstances now (its late and ... well you get the idea) but
none the less it was a bad call on a player that has really been under the
gun lately for his "style" of hustle.

Oh yes baseball umps are held accountable for their calls. Every
umpire is graded and controversial calls are reviewed. Even the
umpires themselves review tapes of games to see what they did right
and wrong. There have been in the past umpires terminated due to bad
calls during the year.
I do imagine that when this is reviewed, there will be some apology
issued. Albeit a very quiet one with little or no media fanfare.

Correct. Unpires are graded and if they fail to make a level of
acceptable to MLB, they can be terminated. Though they really have to
be really bad for that to happen. Also the grading is done so that the
best umpires will call teh playoff games. That is extra money.

They should be fined heavily for bad calls... that is the only way to keep
them to a minimum...

There are procedures for disciplinary action for umpires. As I stated
before t hey are graded and if they do not meet a level of acceptable
performance they can be demoted to the minors. That in itself becomes
a drop in pay. AAA umpires make between $2500 and $3400 per month.
Major league umps make more but I am not sure how much more. Still
their pay is far less than the players themselves make.
The biggest hit to an umpire is to be demoted back down to the minors.

>>>The biggest hit to an umpire is to be demoted back down to the minors<<<
I think one of the biggest differences between the majors and minors for the
officials is the travel expense accounts...the major league crews live like
kings on the road...I don't think it's so sweet in the minors...
What I don't understand is why they don't embrace something that will only
help them make fewer of the mistakes that can get them relegated to the
minors...
It seems to me like a "collective" ego is bigger than the collective
intelligence/mind-set of the umpires and their union...they are too scared
to relinquish a little bit of power (that they un-rightfully hold) in trade
for something that can save their ass and make work easy for them...
Here is why I think they are so reluctant...
....I know there are some very good umpires that are very talented and
intelligent...but OTOH, just like the players live under the "bean ball
legacy"...umpires are no different and they too have their secrets and
biases and they know how and when they can put them to use...the (MLB)
umpires are an elite circle that has more secrets than the Freemasons!...I
think they view anything that takes any of their ultimate decision making
authority away as an infringement on their brotherhood...and they would
rather rely on their ability (or lack there of) and maintain the dictator
like authority...
oh well...all I can say is (in the words of Robert Earl Keen Jr)..."...If I
were king...there'd be some changes made..."
