I thought about that too. But Geo is probably more likely to win the gold
glove. Geo is probably the best all around catcher even if Mcann posts
bigger offensive numbers. Nobody on the team is that far above anyone else.
I like it that way. The Cubs this year win as a team.
Nor the national league the MVP will probably be Puljos. If I was talking
just the Cubs I would have to say Ryan Dempster. Even if he doesn't win we
are usually in a good position when he pitches. I don't think we even make
the playoffs without Dempster.

A hot september for a individual whose team makes the playoffs will probably
decide MVP.

For Cubs MVP I think I'd go with Ramirez, although Soto would not
be a bad choice. Eric is right, someone could get hot for the next
month and a half and run away with it.

The key here---and I don't think that can be determined---is how much
responsibility does Soto have for the success of the Cubs' pitching staff.
Right now, there is not a chance for MVP, but he is at present a shoe-in
(shoo-in?) for Rookie of the Year.

That makes me think of previous Cubs Rookies of the Year. Somehow, bad
things seem to be cast on them. From Hubbs to Walton to Wood, the award
seems to be jinxed against the Cubs.

Wood has hit plenty of bumps, but he's still pretty good. Billy
Williams was a ROTY.

An off-day trivia question. I did a little back checking. 11 ROTY have
played for the Cubs at some time in their careers since 1947. How many can
anyone name without checking the list?

Does the 11 include players who didn't win the ROTY as a Cub (like
Rick Sutcliffe)?
Hakan 08-19-2008, 01:11 PM > Does the 11 include players who didn't win the ROTY as a Cub (like

I suppose so. I would go with Hubbs, Williams, Dawson, Suitcliffe,
Walton, Santiago as quite certain ones. Then I am into guessing.
Gossage? Pappas? Brock?
I believe that Wood was expected to get lots more out of it. His 1998
performance really indicated a multiple Cy Young award career. Even his
few good years did not live up to that.

All I could come up with, other than those listed, were Eric Karros

Yes. Any former ROTY who played with the Cubs at some time during his
career.

None of the latter list. You did quite well on the former. I would never
have gotten Santiago. Of the remaining 5, one was ancient history. Won in
1947 and played with the Cubs at the end of his career. One was a decently
contributing player in a recent year---but he played less than a year.
Another was a pitcher who only pitched in a couple of games, as I recall.
The fourth was a key member of a very fine Cubs' team. I think you just
overlooked the 5th---Kerry Wood.

I had forgotten about Ted Sizemore. So there are 12. Eric Karros is
another. Still 3 to go.

Did they have to play in the bigs to count?
Nomar
Hollandsworth

Ahh....A poorly designed and researched test on my part. Yes, they had to
play in the bigs. My recollection was that one of them, Hideo Nomo, pitched
a couple of games for the Cubs. But on further look back, I see that he
only pitched for Iowa and never was brought up by the Cubs. With regards to
the last two players you mentioned, I was limiting this to those who were
ROTY in the NL. I should have stated that. You wouldnt know I used to
teach and do this kind of thing for a living.

Is that two more with the subtraction of Nomo? I have now recalled for
sure that Scott Williamson is one. I'm not sure regarding the very last
one. My only guess would be Moises Alou. That is probably not right.

I'm not going to do this again! I can't even recall Scott Williamson
pitching for the Cubs. But, indeed, you are right. If you see my post in
response to Eric down below, Nomo pitched for Iowa, but the Cubs never
called him up.
Let's end the embarrassment (for me)----
The two who have not been mentioned are Alvin Dark (ROTY in 1947---played
some 3B for the Cubs at the end of his career---not surprised no one got
him.) and Sarge Matthews (I *am* surprised no one came up with him.)

Dark was ROTY in 48, Jackie Robinson was 47. I just now looked it up
on wikipedia to be sure. Something else I saw there that I'd never
heard before was that the BBWAA voted on ROTY from 1940-46. In 46 it
was Eddie Waitkus, so there's another Cub, at least if you count the
BBWAA award. I had always heard that Robinson was the first.

Anyway, this has been a fun topic for a day with no game.

"Batting lefty now, Alomar hits a drive ... OFF OF HUBBS' shoulder -- the
ball ricochets over to Walton, who's playing Alomar to pull. Walton catches
it before it hits the ground. But what a minute - Kenny is down! Wood runs
over to cover second. He takes the quick throw from Jerome, to get Benes by
