Saw this blurb in a NY paper (via Sports Illustrated):

"Mike D'Antoni has noticed a reaction whenever the topic of the Knicks
comes up around the U.S. men's basketball players. "They usually
snicker," D'Antoni said yesterday. "I don't like that too much. That
ticks me off." The perception of the franchise is just one of several
things on the list D'Antoni hopes to change. D'Antoni is here as an
assistant under Mike Krzyzewski, and he's made an impression on the
players he's coaching, many of whom believe he's the right man to
revive the Knicks. "I think you've got a long list of players that
want to play for him, I'll tell you that," Kobe Bryant told The Post.
"He's just incredibly sharp. He's a brilliant, brilliant basketball
mind. He's going to bring a system and now you just have to find
players to plug into that system."

I give Del Negro two years max. Paxson's made a string of mistakes
over the past year, and Reinsdorf screwed the pooch on the hiring of
our new head coach. I fear the play-off series we dropped to the
Pistons a few years back was the high point from this core of players.

Well, here's the deal:

There are two things that Jerry Reinsdorf loves, money and
defense. D'Antoni was going to cost too much and he doesn't
apparently believe in defense.

As far as it goes, players have always enjoyed playing run and
gun offense. Scoring lots of points make players happy. Just
listen to Ben Gordon. But many players hate playing defense.
It's hard work and it doesn't necessarily show up in the
scorebook or lead to bigger paychecks.

I'd like to see Vinnie given a chance before everyone starts
writing his obit in Chicago. What has D'Antoni won anyway?

Why are people down on Del Negro? Who of us heard of Jeff Van Gundy
or Mike D'Antoni prior to their first NBA job? Phil Jackson was not a
household name before he was hired in Chicago. Give the guy a chance.

del negro hasn't even been an assistant coach, tho. the other guys you
mentioned at least had some time as assistants. i think a lot of
people believe that with this very young team they needed a vet coach
who would command respect, since they railroaded a guy like boylen
(sp?). i was hoping avery johnson would get the gig. i don't see del
negro's chances as real good but maybe he proves me wrong. it's
certainly not an inspired pick, since they botched the d'antoni and
collins deals. it makes del negro look like he was table scraps they
decided to use since the main course and desert got dropped on the
floor, so to speak.

anyway, i hope they're able to do a sign and trade with gordon (and
maybe gooden) for a decent low post guy. gordon's delusional if he
thinks he deserves to be the highest paid jon the team ust because he
had the most PPG with his whopping 43% FG shooting and his non-
interest in defense. he can't even dribble without falling down. fuck
that guy. the game isn't just about shooting and he's severely
undersized. he's this era's vinnie "microwave" johnson, at best- a
bench player. gordon's attitude sucks. we already have a guy like
that- hughes. we don't need to waste cap space on another of the same
thing, even if gordon is a better version. one dimensional bench guys
don't deserve $1o mil+/yr, sorry.
