So he plays First Base. Do you build a team by drafting what you already
have? Drafting a catcher or shortstop might be a good idea.

I love this signing. the reds are willing to spend money. they will
find a place for both alonzo and votto in the lineup together. still
need a catcher and another outfielder though.

You don't draft based on need. You draft talent. You can always trade talent
for need.

Just FWIW they signed a catcher last year. That didn't work out too well.

Maybe Jocketty is looking to find gold twice and thinking he
can find another Poulouse(sp?).

We drafted a catcher 2 years ago. I don't really hear too much
about his progress through the system though.

HOw far away is Alonzo from playing. He's already 21 at least.
If he is really that talented he shouldn't be that far away.
That would be a nice problem to have though. You can always
use good talent to try to get something you need in a trade.

The problem is in getting busts in the draft. An area in
which both of our pro franchises excel.

He's overmatched in low A ball right now. I'm guessing he comes back to
Dayton next year. He's young, so he does have time, but it was a lot of
money for a guy stalled in the low minors.

Barry Larkin was probably the last college position player the reds took
this high in the draft. He spent a year and a half in the minors, 600 at
bats. As has been mentioned elsewhere, they could stick Votto in left.

Exactly. On Yonder's side is that the national press seems to approve of the
slot where he was drafted. That's the first time that's happened in a couple
of years. Krivsky gets a lot of credit for "rebuilding the farm system," but
for the most part the guys who came up during his tenure were from Dan
O'Brien's drafts. Krivsky's drafts were of decidedly mixed results.

The Reds say they think he is two years away. They better be right,
three years his contract becomes a problem.

Well in three years he's 24 with no options left. He'll either be in the
majors or have destroyed his career.

The reds are going to start him an high A ball ASAP. Assuming he handels
himself there, that starts him with the lookouts next spring. They tend to
push the fast-tracked guys through there pretty quickly so that would put
him in Louisville in July of next year. ....aiming him as the first baseman
for the 2010 season.

Sarasota seems right.
