View Full Version : Who were those people booing Frankie?
Steven Douglas 08-14-2008, 05:52 AM They must be Los Angeles Angels fans, because Anaheim Angels fans
would not boo Frankie. Anaheim Angels fans appreciate Frankie's
contribution to the 2002 championship, but the bandwagoner Los Angeles
Angels fans just don't care about that. They boo the saves leader for
blowing a save. Amazing.

If there were such a thing as 'Anaheim Angels", I suspect their fans
wouldn't have time to boo anyone, because they would be too busy sitting
around whining like little babies, two years after the fact, about their
name being changed around.

I was absolutely shocked. Unfortunately, this is the downside of having
a great winning team--you attract a bunch of front-running fairweather
fans who don't understand that the ONLY reason to boo someone on your
team is if he's slacking off. Damn it--I DO NOT want Angels Stadium
turning into Yankee Stadium, or Fenway, or, gawd forbid, Citizen's Bank.

There were. You may remember, the Anaheim Angels won the World Series
in 2002. They beat the San Francisco Giants in seven games. It was
very exciting, especially that sixth game victory, when they were down
five runs early in the game but had a great comeback win to force a
seventh game.

I see. So are you one of those Los Angeles Angels fans who would boo
Frankie for blowing a save?

I agree, but it's already happened. And, unfortunately, it will only
get worse from here on out. It's a shame, but I don't enjoy going to
the stadium anymore. I'll just watch on TV, and hit the mute button
the next time these phoney front-running Angel fans boo Frankie..

I don't think it's necessarily fair-weather fans. Frankie wants a
huge contract. I've heard rumors of $15M.
So while I don't condone the boo-birds, I can understand them.
Oh, and for the record:
1. I wouldn't boo one of our own.
2. I've been an Angels fan since I was 5 years old (1967).

They did this in April when he 1st blown his save (which was saved by
Hunter's walk-off grand slam. Too bad he couldn't get the ball & save us
from that 3-run homer last night.) Everyone here is right. I too was mad
over him blowing a save but don't want Halo fans to be acting like A-holes
with K-Rod or have they forgetten he's currently the best closer in all of
baseball. Also let's keep the bad sportmanship to those who are Sox (Red &
White), Yankees or Ray fans.

I don't know that I would agree that Frankie is the best save artist in
baseball. He's certainly had the most save opportunities in baseball this
year, but does that make him the best closer? Right now (8/14/08) , he has
46 saves, and the next best record is a 4 way tie at 32 saves. What if
Frankie had only 33 saves with the same amount of save opportunities (51)?
He'd still be number one, right? But he would have quite a few more blown
saves. He already has 5 blown saves this season.
Joakim Soria has 32 saves, and has only blown 2.
Joe Nathan and Brian Wilson both have 32 saves, and have only blown 3 each.
Mariano Rivera has 29 saves, and has only blown 1.
Brad Lidge has 28 saves and has not blown any!!!
Frankie has more wild pitches than the next five closers put together. He
has more walks than most closers in the game and fewer strike-outs than most
closers.
Is he really the best closer in baseball? NO! Is he worth 15 million a
year? NO. Sorry Frankie, but you are not going to be wearing Angels' Red
next season, and if you are, please keep your frigging, "give it up to God
hysterics to yourself!"

Personally, I would boo anyone anytime I see fit, with that silly 'freedom
of speech' thing I subscribe to.
Did you ever chastize your child for something? Did you still love them
anyway?

It's poor sportsmanship, pure and simple. And rude. And a sign that
you're taking a game far far too seriously, as if the players owe you
perfection, which is, of course, impossible. As long as they're working
their butts off (which every Angel player is, of course, or he'd be off
the team), then there is absolutely no reason for any decent human being
to boo them when they have a bad day.
Of course, you're free to boo anybody you want to, but any real fan is
going to consider you a poor excuse of a fan for doing so.

Did I say I wanted to infringe on anyone's right to free speech? I
said I'd stop going to the stadium if this is the way the newby
bandwagon Los Angeles Angels fans are going to behave, and I'll watch
on TV and hit the mute button.

I would never boo my child. Would you boo yours? And if the newby Los
Angeles Angels fans are going to start booing their own players for
having a bad day, why not start booing Vlad everytime he swings at a
pitch in the dirt? Or throws to the wrong base? Or keeps on running
the bases until he's out? Is that next?

I don't expect Frankie to be an Angel next year, but I'll always be
grateful to him for his contribution to the 2002 championship team. I
can only understand the booing if it's coming from bandwagon fans who
weren't around for the 2002 post-season.

Most of his exhuberant post-game celebration is to his grandfather,
who raised him. Of course I wouldn't expect a bandwagon fan to be
aware of that.

Did I say 'boo my child'? I said chastize.
And by the way, these aren't children; they're men who make millions of
dollars a year. They have no blind allegiance to their team, as F-Rod will
prove after the season. Is there any reason that the fans should have any
blind allegiance to them, and not express disapproval if they feel like it?

I think Jeanne already answered you on that point. I notice you had no

You should really be grateful to Aaron Sele. If Aaron hadn't hurt his
arm, Frankie would not have been eligible for the postseason roster.

I don't see any response from Jeanne prior to the post below where she
disavows any relationship to you. Pretty easy to see why, and although I
can't see what she wrote, you're probably better off letting her answer for
you anyway.

Well, since you asked a question that she had already answered, I saw
no reason to answer it again. But since you missed it -- and it's such
an excellent response to your question -- here it is:
[quoting Jeanne] It's poor sportsmanship, pure and simple. And rude.

I didn't "disavow" Steven. Quite the contrary. I pointed out that we
weren't related to forestall anybody claiming that, of course, we were
agreeing with each other because we're married or related by blood.
