View Full Version : Someone Call 911 for Twins GM Bill Smith!
powrwrap 08-13-2008, 03:55 PM Would someone please call 911 for Bill Smith?
He's been stuck, immobilized in his office chair, sitting with hands
firmly placed under butt cheeks since May 10th, the day that he lost
his 8th inning reliever Pat Neshek. He has done nothing to replace
Neshek.
If you're not going to call emergency services would you please slap
him across the face and yell, "THE TWINS NEED A BULLPEN GUY THAT CAN
PITCH THE 8TH INNING, AND GUERRIER ISN'T THE GUY!"
Thank you.

I agree in spirit -- though let's give Bill credit though for picking up
Breslow mid-season -- he HAS turned out to be an effective reliever for the
Twins, so it's not as if he hasn't added any value to the bullpen this year.
And the problems with Guerrier are only recent -- he was fine until he
started to fall apart the last few weeks Totally worn out from overuse?
Regression to the mean? I'm betting on the former, he was pretty dang good
for 2 seasons plus.
NONE of this absolves him from some major, major bullpen missteps:
1) Re-signing Rincon for big money (or was this Ryan's major gaffe)
2) The retaining of Bass as an occasional high-leverage option -- Gardenhire
shares some responsibility here of course but it's ridiculous to have 2
mop-up level relievers in this pen
3) Failure to cut a deal for any of the decent relivers like LaTroy and
Bradford who were just picked up after the trade deadline
4) Here's the worst one, IMO: failing to call up help from the minors. Has
Bill Smith not watched this team this decade? That's what this team has
done over and over again with fantastic results... Neshek, Guerrier,
Perkins, Crain, Rincon, were ALL midseason callups and though not all were
amazing right away, some were fantastic and all have been effective since
then. NOT calling up Korecky again is just silly... or Mulvey, or
ANYONE...
Sometimes this team just doesn't make sense.

How about a left fielder that can Catch - that 4 inning monstrosity
8/18 was one of this years worst from a long Delmon blooper reel. It
was worst than the one he actually got an error for. It also cost the
Twins the game.
