Just looking around some rosters to see how some former Braves (or
prospects) are doing. Here's some of the run-down:

Mark Teixeira: 325/440/525 for the Angels; 9 RBI in 11 games
Matt Harrison: 7.07 ERA in 7 starts for Texas. 35+ IP, 6 HR allowed, 7 K and
19 BB
Salty: 231/337/335 in 200+ PA at C this year; 37 SB, only 7 CS in 47 games.
Ouch.
Andruw: 161/261/254 in 234 PA (3 HR). Wow. Just, wow.
Willy Aybar: 225/299/379 in about 200 PA for Tampa Bay
Wilson Betemit: 253/276/411 in about 150 PA for the f'in Yankees
Lance cormier: 4.95 ERA in 43 relief innings for Baltimore
Jermaine Dye: hitting 276/339/491 for his career; andruw is hitting
259/339/489 for his career. Who saw that coming in 1996?
Edgar Renteria: 261/314/345 for DET
gary Sheffield: 222/322/375, also for DET
Tony Pena:157/178/204 in almost 200 PA; working hard to keep Andruw from
being the worst hitter in the majors (but, a 0 ERA!)
Kyle Davies: 4.66 ERA in 13 starts/65 IP for KC
Horacio Ramirez: 2.59 ERA in 24 IP for KC - 1 HR, only 1BB, 11K; just traded
to Chicago Sox
Andy Marte: 185/236/285 in about 160 PA for CLE
Paul Byrd: 4.53 ERA in 131 IP for CLE
Joey Devine: 1.05 ERA in 25+ IP for Oakland. 17 hits, 8 walks, 0 homers, 31
K
Dan Meyer: just called up for OAK, has pitched 10 solid innings so far
Rudy Seanexz: 3.58 ERA in 32+ IP for Philly. He's still around
Willie Harris: 247/342/433 in 260+ PA for the Nats
Ryan langerhans: 250/393/338 in about 80 PA for teh Nats
Pete Orr, Ray King and Johnny Estrada - all sucking for the Nats
Mark DeRosa: 276/369/443 for the Cubs, playing five positions and getting
445 PA; 278/345/413 for his career. Damn.
Henry Blanco: 296/337/395 for the Cubs - proof they have made a deal with
Lucifer
Adam Wainwright: 3.14 ERA for STL, but hurt much of the season
Adam LaRoche: 265/343/470 for PIT
Mark Redman: back to earth with a 7.54 ERA for Colorado this year.
Greg Maddux: 4.12 ERA, 6-8 for the Pads. After a streak of something like 14
starts without a win, he's now strung together three wins in his last three
starts, for 353 for his career

It seems like the Braves made some judicious choices about whom they
traded. Right now the Jermaine Dye trade seems like the worst and I'd
like to put a word in for Mark DeRosa. He was the all purpose utility
player with the Braves often flirting with 300 and he played with a lot
of enthusiasm (say as compared with Andruw who smiled, shrugged and did
his thing over and over.

I know this'll sound like a convenient rationale, but I really don't think
Dye was going to develop with Atlanta. He went off and sucked for KC, before
finally going back to the minors and learning a little plate discipline
there. Jeff Francoeur looks a lot like that early career Dye in approach,
and we couldn't dispatch him to the minors for more than three days. and
Richmond is not the place hitters go to learn patience.

The Braves haven't had the best of luck with their utility infielders.
DeRosa hit only .239 with 3 HR in 118 games for Atlanta in 2004; that was
the year they tried committing to him at third base, too, so it wasn't for
lack of commitment on the part of the team. he then went off and flourished
in the utility role, hitting 285/362/440 since he left Atlanta. Same thing
happened with tony Graffanino - he hit well in a utility role, so the Braves
made him the starter at 2B. He hit .211. He went off and became a utility
player again and put together a pretty nice career in that role, hitting
..276/.345/.405 the rest of his career.
