Arizona acquired Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, who is tied for
the major league lead with 32 home runs, for three prospects.

The trade was first reported by KTAR Radio in Phoenix.

In exchange for Dunn, Cincinnati will receive minor league pitcher
Dallas Burk and two other players to be named later.

Buck got a call from D-backs farm director A.J. Hinch, telling him he
had been traded for Dunn. Buck, who was traveling with the Single-A
Visalia Oaks, was already on the bus to San Jose, Calif., when Hinch
called him. He had to tell teammates of the trade en route.

"It was kind of funny," Buck said, "because I was rumored to be in a
deal for [Mark] Teixeira, so when I just told them they all thought I
was messing with them."

Buck was drafted by Arizona in the third round of the 2005 draft. Once
a top-notch prospect, Buck's draft status fell after had an elbow
injury revealed on the eve of the '05 draft that bumped him out of a
likely first-round slot. He had Tommy John surgery last summer and had
begun pitching in Single-A this summer.

Dunn is tied with the Phillies' Ryan Howard for the NL lead with his
32 homers. The White Sox's Carlos Quentin also has 32 home runs.

the reds never get anything back for there trades. they just give
people away for next to nothing. no wonder they allways suck. now the
reds have only one mlb ready outfielder in bruce. I know the reds need
to rebuild but all they got was a minor league pitcher coming off
tommy john surgery and two ptbnl's. they don't have any outfielders in
the miors worth a damn, so they will have to sign two free agent
outfielders or make another trade.

That move will really keep the asses out of the seats. They might
have 100 people in the GAPB, now.
I know that they threw in the towel a long time ago, but....

The Bengals play tonight. We can look forward to that.

100 losses, here we come!

An injury prone single A pitcher and two PTBNs for the best offensive
player you have.

Wow.

This is exactly what I always worried would happen if they ever pulled
the trigger...that they'd be too dumb to know his true value.

Thank goodness he won't be clogging up the basepaths anymore!

The only reason I could see them hanging on to Dunn after his no-trade
clause expired was because having him around meant they would have a better
than 1-30 chance of signing him. That's gone now. If they were going to deal
him for nothing......

well, I guess I won't need to complain about whey they are keeping Chris
Dickerson down on the farm anymore.

And when Dunn leaves the D-backs, they'll get the extra two draft picks.

GREAT deal from the diamondbacks perspective.

I'm honestly shocked that's the best they could get for Dunn.
Good Luck to Adam. He was always fun to watch. Every fly ball was an
adventure.
My wife and I went to the game where he hit the grand slam last month. There
were three players my wife could name on the field,Bruce, Dunn and Junior.
Two of them are gone now.

Dunn said all along that he wanted to stay. His history with the team
suggests that he could be trusted to be telling the truth (he signed a
multi-year deal previously when most everyone thought he was going to
leave for Houston the first chance he got).

So, they don't re-sign a guy who is still in his prime and wants to
stay, and they apparently get virtually nothing in return for him when
he's having one of his better seasons.

This team beat most of the caring out of me a long time ago. This may
have finished the job.

Thats how I feel. Not because the finally traded Griffey and Dunn, but
because they got so little back in return so far. No top prospect, no
real pitching help. Frankly, Jocketty has sucked ass so far. I doubt
we'll see anything for Ross either.

I just cant take more years of "rebuilding". Every GM thats started
it has been canned to be replaced by another GM who starts it over.

Every crop of youngsters brings a glimmer of hope and then the
organization refuses to add the missing parts and the youngsters leave
or just fall apart

If Tampa wins the AL East I'm done following baseball. I'm serious. I
know it sounds silly but whats the point really? the Reds cant turn
the corner and some team thats never won more than 70 games makes the
playoffs. I'm tired of having my teams ripped apart at the whims of
GM's who either can follow through on rebuilding or dont get a chance.
Then some doofus organization rolls a winner out of nowhere using the
same strategy used here. And I bet they plummet to the basement next
season. Its all just seems so random.

We now have maybe 1 legitimate major league outfielder on the roster.
3 years ago we had 5 or 6 and that was a "problem".

OK i'm calming down now. We'll just have see what else Walt got for
Dunn before making a final judgement. No screw it! He got jackshit and
we all know it. This organization will never win anything again.

You know what gets me? Realizing that there's virtually no difference
now between rooting for the Reds or for the Pirates. Same sized
markets, same style of management, same results. Pittsburgh even has
a nicer stadium. Bleh.

I guess this answers my question about whether or not the Reds would be a
winning ball club within the next 10 years. What is the record for most
losing seasons in a row? Wow. Could be the worst organization in the MLB.

Believe it or not, the record for consecutive losing seasons is going
to be 16, set at the end of this year.

By the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Actually, the Phillies had 16 consecutive losing seasons from 1933 to
1948. That bettered their 14 consecutive losing seasons from 1918 to
1931.

In 1930, they finished in last place despite scoring 944 runs batting
..315/.365/.458 as a team since their pitchers allowed 1199 runs with a
team ERA of 6.71.

Good to know - the Pirates won't set the record until next year, so
the Reds still have their work cut out for them :)

Dan's not the type to push his own stuff here (so I will:
http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/diamondbacks_acquired_dunn/)

The central point makes a good deal of sense to me, "I'm weaseling
my way more than usual about the PTBNL because, even though I'm
not a fan of Walt Jocketty in general, I can't imagine that
he would take a package in which the best player is Dallas
Buck over high draft picks."

But he's not *expecting* a blur-chipper coming back.

What do you expect to get for him? Aren't they just getting his
services for less than 2 months?

Now Jocketty has some money to work with and the laisze-faire attitude
of Grif and Dunn are history.

I'd like to have seen Dunn stay around though. The guy plays every
day and can carry a team for two months of the season. However, aren't
the Reds just like any other team as far as perhaps getting his
services for 2009? I don't really understand why he was batting
fifth. That's the guy I would have put at third. With his power
and his ability to get walks I felt he was misused at 5th.

The really insulting part to Reds fan is if they try to trot out
the Freel/Hopper/Harriston answer in the outfield next year.

While Dan's correct to wait, I still am amazed at how little Jocketty
got back. Just wow.

Believe it or not, the record for consecutive losing seasons is going
to be 16, set at the end of this year.

By the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Yeah.

Actually I am kinda Glad they got rid of everybody! hell they were going no
where anyway. Granted they might have got a little more but if they are
losing their asses on a day to day basis then move up the younger guys we
can lose with them also. While they are at it I hope they get rid of Dusty
and his pet CF Mr Patterson too. That would really make me happy!
