View Full Version : Gardenhire Heaps Praise On Span

Span was 3 for 5, with 4 RBI, which included a bases-loaded clearing
triple, a single, and a bunt single, plus a stolen base. He also
robbed a 2 run HR off the bat of Adrian Beltre, leaping high against
the wall in right center to snare the ball.

“Boy, he’s been some kind of player for us.… I wish I was his agent
right now,”

He’s been promoted to Minnesota twice this season only because Michael
Cuddyer got hurt, most recently a finger injury for which the
outfielder may return next week.

When he does, Span isn’t going anywhere.

“He’ll bat No. 1, and he’ll play every day. I can tell you that,”
Gardenhire said.

When asked what he’s brought to a Twins team that reclaimed first
place for the first time in three months with Span starring,
Gardenhire gushed like a garden hose.

“Calming. Super defense. Understands the game more. Has grown up a
lot,” the manager said. “I can’t really think of too many things he
hasn’t done well since he’s been back.”

Gardenhire heaps praise on Span and I and every Twins fan should heaping
praise on this kid... he's been absolutely off the charts... about the
only thing he hasn't done is hit for much power... and even that is showing
signs lately... all he does is hit for average, draw walks, and play
fantastic defense in RF... and for peanuts...

Great example of how sometimes minor leaguers who don't seem to be showing
much promise can just all of a sudden "get it" and turn into a special
player.

I don't watch much ESPN but the last few times I have the Baseball Tonight
guys have been marvelling at him... saying "It seems like everytime we do a
Top Plays that Denard Span shows up in there..." he had to have been #1
tonight -- that was an amazing catch! He and Gomez together make a
fantastic OF tandem. They also would have a great duo nickname that is far
too crass and offensive to use, but funny.

Contrast their defense with the black hole of suck that is Delmon Young in
LF -- uggghhh...

Go-Nards?
What?

Delmon is pretty effective going for balls hit to his left, but
anything hit toward the LF foul line is an adventure. He also has
trouble judging fly ball depth in the Dome. Kubel looks just as lost
out there.

I regret to say I got brink's joke. I won't state it, but if you
do a Google search on "cleaning product" and Denard's last name,
it will come to you, and then you will regret it too. :)

Uggh. Yeah, you're right about the regret part.

There are plenty of LFers out there I can think of who are equally inept
with the glove... Ryan Braun, Manny Ramirez, and Carlos Quentin for
starters... yet there's something about those three that's different than
what Delmon brings to the table... can't quite put my finger on it -- what
could it be?

So, when Cuddyer comes back, where are they going to put him? Are they
going to move Cuddyer to left? Or Span to left?

DES
From many... One.

I hope that they put Cuddyer in RF, Span in CF, Delmon/Kubel in LF.
Carlos Gomez will be a bench player, a pinch runner and/or late inning
defensive replacement. I'd guess they'd put Gomez in CF in the late
innings and move Span over to LF.

A "cleaner" duo nickname could be:

BuntMan and RobEm.

Maybe I'm a lousy googler, but I still don't get it. As to Cuddyer
coming back, I think they should platoon Cuddyer and Kubel, and bench
Young, or send him to Rochester for Jason Pridie, who can play some
defense.

Doh, Cuddyer broke his foot on rehab assignment. Wow. Can you say
Chad Allen?
