Writing on his favorite pitcher, and yours:

"The amazing thing about this game was that the Yankees were going down
fast, it's like they couldn't stop themselves, couldn't slow things down,
you could almost hear Dick Vitale shouting, "Get a T-O baby!" You will hear
announcers talk about a pitcher being in control - well, I have never seen a
pitcher more in control than Maddux that day, not Kerry Wood when he struck
out 20 or Nolan Ryan during one of his no-hitters or the many replays I've
seen of perfect games."

I remember listening to that game on the radio, ...
Yankees radio. IIRC Doc Gooden was the Yankees pitcher that day. Former
Braves announcer, John Sterling (it is high, it is far, it is gone.
Theeee Yankees Win, etc) , was calling the game. I seem to remember
that at the end of 8 innings Maddux had faced only 24 batters and ended
up facing only 28. It was indeed the most masterful performance of
pitching I had ever heard, even moreso than Randy Johnson's perfect game
against the Braves.

Thanks Colin. I've met Joe and he is my favorite baseball writer.
Joe is even one of my Facebook friends. He is wonderful and it's
quite a confluence to get him writing about Maddux. If he would just
say some kind words about John MacArthur we would be nearly soul
mates. :)
Joe has written about Maddux before and I knew the he liked Maddux a
lot, might have even known he was Joe's favorite. Wish he did a Mad
Dog Log too. I still schedule my week around Maddux starts. Tape
them all. Really the only baseball I intentionally watch now is
Maddux. The Padres are so lost, the Braves have given up. When I
find I have some free time in the evenings on non-Maddux nights I'm
hoping back and fourth between Braves and Rays.
I've started "Soul of Baseball" by Joe (if his last name was easier,
I'd call him that) and it is really good. He's just an excellent
writer, personable, insightful, into advanced stats but not so nerdy
he has it all figured out. A kindred spirit. If we hadn't already
been introduced we certainly needed to be.

Glad to hear it. He always writes good stuff, too bad he's censored in China
:-)
