View Full Version : ESPN's top ten Padres
Seapig 08-04-2008, 06:04 AM All this month, "Baseball Tonight" is giving their picks for each
franchise's three best players of all time. They have voting on their
website, where their "experts" have chosen each team's top ten to go
on the ballot. Here's their top ten for our Padres:
Nate Colbert
Tony Gwynn
Trevor Hoffman
Randy Jones
Jake Peavy
Benito Santiago
Eric Show
Garry Templeton
Greg Vaughn
Dave Winfield
I was OK with the list until about halfway down, then it started
getting stupid. When I saw Show and Templeton, I figured they were
putting a high value on longevity with the team, but then what the
hell is Greg Vaughn doing on the list? The only possible reason to
have Vaughn on the list, and not Caminiti, is that they're keeping
Cammy off because of the steroids - of course Bonds is still on the
Giants ballot, and Palmeiro is on the Rangers ballot, Sosa is on the
Cubs ballot, etc.
Even if they have a legitimate reason to exclude Caminiti, there are
plenty of other guys more deserving than Vaughn. He had only one good
season here. I know the Padres haven't had a great history, but I'm
pretty sure we could come up with more than ten players who had more
than one good season here. Where's Finley, or Nevin, or Kennedy,
or...? I don't think Vaughn belongs in the top 20, let alone the top
10.
I'm probably getting upset about nothing: regardless of who's on the
ballot, we know the top three will be Gwynn, Hoffman, Winfield,
probably in that order.

Has anyone else besides Caminiti won the MVP while wearing a Padre
uniform?

No. Four Cy Youngs, two Rookies of the Year, just one MVP.

No, he doesn't, and the omission of Nevin by itself robs the list of any and
all credibility. There's no measure by which he's not one of the top five
offensive players in the history of the franchise.

I'm OK with Alomar not being there, because he wasn't here all that
long, and didn't become really great until after he left (Ozzie Smith
is in the same boat), but he is more deserving than Vaughn.

I'm not sure what criteria the BT guys are using, but if they're looking for
"overall" Padres guys, I would include Timmy Flannery just because he was
the heart & soul of the team for most of a decade & then coached for us. I
know his numbers are pedestrian at best, but if we just had a couple guys
with his heart & work ethic right now we probably wouldn't be battling to
stay out of the MLB cellar.
Go Pads !

Steroids or no steroids, he's gotta go on the list.
just my opinion.

They did the Padres last night. Tony Gwynn was their pick - some
things are so obvious that even ESPN can't get them wrong.
When they were teasing the segment, "coming up, who's the greatest
Padre of all time" they showed clips of Winfield, Gwynn, Hoffman,
and... Caminiti. I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be Caminiti,
when they didn't even put him on the ballot (the other clue was that
they said they'd be talking with the winner).
They had Winfield second, and Hoffman third. Winfield may have had
the better overall career, but this was greatest *Padre* of all time.
Hoffman would get into the Hall of Fame based solely on what he's done
as a Padre; if you look only at what Winfield did as a Padre, he
wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to the Hall.
As long as I'm picking on ESPN, I might as well nitpick. They showed
a clip of Tony's 3000th hit, with Mel Proctor's call, and gave credit
to KFMB Radio. The night before, when awarding "greatest Diamondback"
status to Randy Johnson, Tim Kurkjian said that he was the only
National Leaguer to win the pitching triple crown in the last 23
years. How quickly they forget.

If they're referring to the major league triple crown, that's correct. But
knowing ESPN, I'm not inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I like Kurkjian, so I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the
doubt, but Johnson didn't win the MLB triple crown. The year he won
the NL triple crown, Pedro Martinez had a better ERA in the AL.

Just be glad Sports Illustrated didnt do the list. They'd probably
have the San Diego Chicken on the list.
