I just read this myself, so sad. He's the only baseball announcer to
ever say anything funny enough that I'd actually laugh out loud. His
wit will definitely be missed.

Not unexpected, but still sad. Skip is one of the reasons I'm a Braves fan,
his humor in the broadcasts and his great work with the others who were part
of that crew during the Braves' run. Might not have been as technically good
as some other play-by-play guys, but made me laugh a lot and helped me learn
and enjoy the game.

Well it was a bit of a shock to me, as I was listening to him on the
way in to watch one of the Cardinals games this past week - Wednesday.
I know he'd gone through some illness, but usually there's some period
of warning; I hope the family was somewhat prepared, and the word that
I heard was that he passed in his sleep, which is tough to beat.
I'll miss you Skip, and I enjoyed the time I got to speak with you.

Me too. I remember during one businessman's special game back in the
90s, something along the lines of:
"It looks like a lot of the businessmen have brought their daughters
to the game".

I watched a ton of BRaves games on the old superchannel when TBS was
one of the few sources of baseball on cable. He made bad games
enjoyable. He was an original wit and stood -- and did until the end
-- out from the cookie-cutter crop of sportscasters.
I will miss hearing his voice and my deepest sympathies to his family.

Hard to believe he's gone. He was one of the good ones.

My favorite (I think this was Skip), was commenting on how many broken
bats there had been since the start of the Iran-Contra hearings.

there are too many to count, but one sticks out for me:
"it sounds like a fine watch: the balk, by dotel."
RIP skip.

That's right, Skip.
We'll get you to another installment of This Week in Baseball as soon
as Jeffery Leonard (?) hits into a 6-4-3 double-play. 6. 4. 3.

rgplotner 08-05-2008, 02:17 AM I was just listening to Skip and Pete together last week and thinking how
great it was that the old Skip was back, sharp and witty as ever. He was
grousing about teams who pick up part of a high-salaried contract in order
to dump a player and how that might be a conflict if that player faced the
team paying his salary in the post season. Pete just smiled and let him run
with it.
I grew up listening to Ernie, Skip, and Pete carry the club through
perennial last place years. There was a dynamic to the trio that made you
feel like you were with friends with three distinct personalities sitting
around, watching a ballgame, making your own entertainment, loving the game
itself no matter how bad the home team played. Skip was the guy who could
drop an ironic funny-as-hell truth, always leveling with the fans, but never
mean-spirited or low.
Never met him, but he was a buddy who dropped by my house every night for a
Braves' game. My buddy just made the Hall of Fame. I'll miss him
tremendously.

Chipper Jones said, ""I figured Skip Caray is as much a part of Atlanta
Braves baseball as any of us". I think that understates it. Sure, there are
a few lifetime Braves, guys like Chipper and Smoltz, but beyond them, and
for longer than them, a good announcer is more a part of the experience of
fanhood than any of the players. These are the voices that bring it to life
when you're listening on the radio, they're the constant as most players
come and go, fans spend hours upon hours of their lives listening to these
people. The players create the moments, but the announcer is a part of every
moment, sometimes via description, sometimes via humor, sometimes via
silence.
The team and fanhood persists, of course, but we Braves fans were fortunate
that we could enjoy Skip's commentary for as long as we did before the team
broadcasts receded from national view. I hadn't heard Skip in a few years,
but he'll always be a part of many of my memories of being a fan these last
16 years.

Remarking on once again drawing a particular matchup against the Marlins:
"...against Brad Penny. He just keeps turning up, huh?"
And can't forget one of his radio ads that I remember in my mind when I
want to do the voice:
"Georgia Power.. a SOUTHERN Company!"
I'll probably remember some more when I think back, but the other one
that was great was one that hopefully someone remembers the details of.
It was either the 2003 or 2004 [I'm leaning 4] season, where a pitcher
was pitching to a batter with the exact same name. No particular puns or
anything like that, but he was just having a grand time narrating this
at-bat!

Greg/g Olson, Ramon Martinez?
They just played the Rob Dibble game. That was the most amazing
game. I think I had to listen to that one on radio for some reason.

That's the one that I thought of immediately. Skip was one of few
announcers who gave the game respect but also poked fun at everyone
participating particularly himself. I think Pete was perhaps a better
broadcaster, but I'll miss Skip more.

After Jack Buck's death in 2002, one commentator described his voice
as being "the soundtrack of our collective childhoods". I thought
that captured it well.
I'll miss Skip too. He was the only Caray I could stand, and he made
up for the other two.
