View Full Version : WJ's first report card
JustTom 08-01-2008, 03:26 PM Gets an F from me.
I believe we had more FA's this year than in most recent years, and
yet he did nothing.
I'm kind of stunned that Affeldt, Fogg, and Weathers are still here,
and disappointed that Ross is as well.
And before anybody gives him credit for KGJ, all reports I've seen are
that Kenny Williams called Walt out of the blue on Wednesday, and WJ
was stunned when he asked about KGJ. Williams has had a hankering
for him for several years.
Am I being unfair?

I don't see how Fogg, Affeldt, Weathers, and Ross count as emptying
the cupboard or qualify as "knee-jerk". They are the type of
veterans in the last year of a deal that you are supposed to flip for
whatever you can get out of them.
Most likely, they aren't coming back, aren't wanted back, and won't
net any picks when they do leave ecause we won't want to offer
arbitration.

Yes, you are being unfair. We don't want Jocketty going knee-jerk.
Preliminary chatter was that Krivsky left the cupboard more full than did
O'Brien. Full of what?
This team is more than a player or two away.
The first thing is to try to get Dunn signed at reasonable money. If it's
$15Mil, and the payroll is $75Mil, Dunn and Arroyo take a third of it!
That makes it kind of hard to round out the roster with quality.

But what do you think you're going to get in return for those guys?
Junior was traded to a team that really wanted him, and all that got
the Reds was a pair of insignificant prospects, neither of whom are
projected to make it in the majors. Here's a better question: if you
had a major league team in a pennant race, would you give up a good
minor leaguer to add Josh Fogg's 7.84 ERA or David Ross's .244 batting
average?
I could see possibly flipping the relievers, but consider the braves
couldn't even move Will Ohman, there wasn't much market for those
kinds of guys this year.

I guess it just depends if you can get anything at all in return. I don't
them see getting much. There's really no urgency to part with them.
