Masset is a 26 year old right handed bit of bullpen fodder. He's the
valuable part.

Richar is a 25 year old with less than 200 major league at bats. He hit
high A ball as a 20 year old and has pretty much scuffled around since
then. He's never really hit anywhere. A shortstop who has been moved to
second base, it makes little sense for the reds to aquire a player like
this. I've read elsewhere that the reds plan on sticking Richar in
centerfield...I don't know why they would do that, but it makes as much
sense as anything I can think of. They don't need MORE players like this
when they already got Valakia and Frazier and Turner.

The White Sox gave up some failed prospects they had accumulated from
other clubs.

I'm not clear if the reds could have recieved any compensation in the
free agent draft by paying for Junior's buyout and offering him
arbitration. I believe the answer is no.

Masset is

The Reds would have never risked offering arbitration to Griffey. If he
accepted, the Reds would certainly have been on the hook for millions
more than Griffey is truly worth.

The only path to compensation for the loss of free agents lies in clubs
offering the player leaving arbitration. I was suprised when Rich Aurilia
refused arbitration. I think he would have come up a big winnter in the cash
game. On the other hand, the reds had made it pretty clear that they didn't
really want him back and didn't have a place for him to play. He went back
to the Giants, not for the cash, but because he wanted playing time.
