Corey 07-31-2008, 05:05 AM I hear Livan Herndandez is an innings-eater, but he kind of stinks at
times (like tonight). So, to make everyone happy: DFA Bonser or Bass,
and call-up Liriano. On every fifth day, Liriano starts and goes 5 or
6 innings (won't have to worry about over-using him, then), then Livan
Hernandez can go to the rest of the way (unless it's a close game,
then maybe we can use another reliever; Nathan will come in the 9th if
it's a save situation, of course). That way we get lots of innings
eaten up!

The best scenario is the Twins trade Bonser (the Rangers are
reportedly interested in him), Livan goes to the pen to be the long
relief guy, Liriano gets called up.
Livan has an innings pitched incentive clause which could make the
above mentioned scenario a reality. He's pitched 139 innings. Once he
reaches 160 innings he gets an additional $133,000. And $133,000 every
five innings thereafter. To put it in a more visual presentation:
160 IP +$133,000
165 IP +$133,000
170 IP +$133,000
175 IP +$133,000
180 IP +$133,000
185 IP +$133,000
190 IP +$133,000
195 IP +$133,000
200 IP +$133,000
If he reaches 200 IP, the Twins owe him an additional $1,197,000. Do
you think the Twins want to pay someone an additional $1M+ to give up
5+ runs per start while in a pennant race?
No one can be that stupid, can they?

Of course, being that Liriano's agent is also Hernandez's agent (Greg
Genske), if Liriano is called up to replace Hernandez in the rotation,
do you think that Genske will file a grievance saying the Twins are
purposely using him in the bullpen so they can avoid paying him
incentive bonuses? LOL

Actually, in all fairness, using Livan Hernandez as a long-reliever
isn't a bad idea at all. If the Twins are winning by enough runs in
the 5th, 6th inning, he can come in give the starters a breather, if
the coaching staff is worried about overworking their young starters
during a pennant race... and he can go several innings at a time, so
our other bullpen guys aren't getting overworked either.

Ha! I hadn't thought of that. Good point.
I suppose Genske has to realize that the big bucks and the long term
bucks is on Liriano.

Exactly right.

Who knows? You'd think if we'd have to endure the Twins' miserly ways
they'd at least be consistent about it...

Exactly... everything about the guy screams "low leverage mop-up guy" -- and
the Twins have 3 of those guys on their roster... WAY overdue to DFA Bass,
trade or DFA Boof, put Livan in the pen, promote Liriano and bring up
another kid to fill other pen spot.

Agreed. He could easily come into a game where the Twins are either
comfortably ahead or too far behind. He'll throw strikes, which is
well-suited to that role.
Combine the fact that he's terrible and the fact that it saves the
Twins money, this one seems like a total no-brainer. Get Texas to give
us a ten-gallon hat for Bonser, bring up the kid, and get Hernandez in
that role. We improve in the starting rotation, and we probably
improve (albeit very slightly) in the bullpen as well. And we wash our
hands of Boof. Win-win-win.

I just heard pitching coach Rick Anderson on the radio say that Livan
is starting next Monday. So the idiocy continues.
